Rabbi Kahane Ends Hunger Strike
NEW YORK — Rabbi
Meir Kahane, head of the
Jewish Defense League, has
ended his hunger strike af-
ter special arrangements
were made to bring kosher
food to him at the federal
prison at Allenwood, Pa.
Kahane began the strike
when kosher food was not
provided for him at the min-
imum security prison where
he is serving a one-year
sentence for parole viola-
tion.
Barry Slotnick, attorney
for Kahane, said that it was
his understanding that, un-
der the agreement by the
U.S. government to comply
with the ruling, all Jewish
prisoners under federal de-
tention requesting kosher
food would hereafter be
provided such a diet which
will include rabbinically-
certified kosher meat and
fowl.

Weinstein, who sentenced
Kahane last - March to a
year in prison for parole
violation, ordered Kahane
to serve his term at the
Allenwood facility and to
receive kosher food there.
U.S. government attor-
neys challenged the kosher
food order, which was up-
held by a lowei court and
by the appeals court.
While the appeals court
order said only that Kahane
was entitled to nutritional-
ly-balanced kosher meals,
which he is getting by re-
stricting his diet at the Al-
lenwood facility to vegeta-
bles, fruits analish such as
tuna, Slotnick said Kahane
would start getting kosher
meat meals soon. Slotnick
said he had been informed
that federal officials were
discussing with local kosher
caterers provision of kosher
meat meals to Kahane.
Prior to his transfer, Ka-
hane J.Arged the supporters
of his "Democracy in Jewish
Life" movement to obtain
signatures from at least
250,000 American Jews be-
fore holding an election to
name national and local
leaders of the Jewish com-
munity.

tiated the move for the
popular election of Jewish
leaders, not lead the drive
in DIJL. "Take DIJL out
of the JDL and give it up to
`respectable' people" so
that it will be accepted by
the general Jewish com-
munity, the JDL founder
urged.

Most of Kahane's re-
marks were aimed at the
leaders of Jewish organiza-
tions, particularly those in
the Conference of Presi-
dents of Major American
Jewish Organizations,
whom he called feudal bar-
ons who for the past 70
years had led American Je-
wry first to spiritual des-
truction and now to physical
danger. He said these lead-
ers had no right to speak for
American Jewry to the Ad-
ministration and Congress.

ruption of the -Maryland-
USSR national team basket-
ball game was assailed by
nationally syndicated col-
umnist Nick Thimmesch
Nov. 28.
In his column, Thim-
mesch said that delaying
the game by throwing oil on
the floor was just as illegal
as Soviet actions against
Israeli athletes and discri-
mination against Jews.
Thimmesch said, "Law-
breaking is lawbreaking,
isn't it, whether performed
by Soviets, American or
zealots in the Jewish De-
fense League?
"The protestors, who
made a point at the basket-
ball game the other night at
the University of Maryland,
were the students carrying
candles and distributing lit-
erature in front of the field
house before the game be-
gan."
