When I sprung the idea on
the co-coaches that Dr. Dar-
dik could run, they looked at
me as though I were nuts. I
knew that Dardik kept in
shape by running, and to
this day, at the age of 38,
Dr. Irving is capable of
breaking 50 seconds in the
400-meter event.

The U.S. had no alterna-
tive than to run Dardik in
the opening leg of the relay
race. As it turned out, he
opened up a two-yard lead
which he turned over to the
second man and the United
States went on to a victory
in the relay, giving Dardik
his second gold medal after
a lapse of 12 years in compe-
tition.

delegation to each Macca-
biah increasing in size,
there will be approximately
250 athletes on the United
States squad. It will be nec-
essary for Dardik to recruit
at least five more qualfiied
sports-oriented medicos.

On the medical side, the
Dardik brothers discovery
is that the umbilical cord,
after being severed from a
mother and her new-born
baby, can be used in graft-
ing operations. It has two
small arteries and a large

vein.

Normally tissue borrowed
from another person is re-
jected, The Dardiks have
developed a method of
"tanning" the vein much as
shoe leather is tanned, by
using a chemical. This pro-
cedure makes the vessel
stronger and seems to bind
the places where the rejec-
tion mechanism might be-
gin.

Upon Dr. Irving's return
from the Pan-American
Games, he will start select-_
ing his staff of doctors for
the United States Macca-
biah team which will parti-
cipate in the 1977 Games in
Israe.
