Israel Currency
Devalued Again?

JERUSALEM (ZINS)
With regard to the govern-
ment's announcement that
the monthly devaluation of
the pound will be postponed
until after the High Holy
Days season, Israel's fi-
nance ministry is expected
to announce a further 2 per-
cent devaluation of the Is-
rael pound. At present the
official rate of exchange is
IL 6.36=$1. However, the
price of the dollar on the
free market has "risen to
$1=IL 7.70. The purpose of
this "creeping devaluation"
is to adjust the official rate
of the Israel pound to its ac-
tual worth. By year's end
the devaluation of the Israel
pound will have been 24 per-
cent.
