NEW YORK (JTA) In
the 25 years since the New
York Association for New
Americans was founded,
there has never been an ex-
tended period without Jew-
ish refuees, according to
Mrs. Sophie S. Udell,
NYANA president.
The agency was created in
1949 to deal with the influx
of thousands of European
Jews who had survived
World War II and the Holo-
caust.
She listed the major
groups of Jews settled by
NYANA in the Greater New
York area, leading off with
a total of 47,600 Jewish DPs
settled during the 1949-1953
period'. During the
1956-1958 period, the agency
resettled 4,000 Jewish refu-
gees from Hungary.

During the 1960s, 2,800
Jewish refugees from Ro-
mania came for resettle-
ment. Two thousand Cu-
ban refugees were settled
here in the 1961-1963 pe-
riod.

Egyptian Jewish refugees
came in two waves —
1957-58 and after the Six-
Day War, a total of 1,400.
After the Six-Day War,
1,400 Jewish refugees from
Poland were settled, as well
as 400 Czech refugees after
the Soviet invasion of Czech-
oslovakia in 1958.
From the end of 1969 to
the present, Mrs. Udell re-
ported, 3,000 Soviet Jews.

Rabin Clarifies
Kuneitra Remark

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Prime Minister's office is-
sued a "clarification" of Pre-
mier Yitzhak Rabin's re-
cent remark on a TV
interview that "I do not
want another Kuneitra"
when Israel withdraws
from Abu _Rodeis.
According to the Prime
Minister's office, the Pre-
mier merely wanted to as-
sure an orderly withdrawal
from the oilfields so as not
to give the Egyptians any
pretext for similar accusa-
tions.

In Washington, Sen.
Charles Percy (R, -' 1 1.),
who aroused an in
Chicago's Jewish commu-
nity last January when he
suggested Israel should
make overtures to the Pa-
lestine Liberation Organi-
zation and called PLO
chief Yasir Arafat "rela-
tively moderate," is now
urging Arafat and the
PLO to restrain their
threats against Israel and
American civilians in
Sinai.

Percy, who was hailed by
Arab elements in the United
States after his January
statements, expressed hope
that "very soon the Palesti-
nians will learn" from
Egyptian President Anwar
Sadat "the advantages of ac-
cepting the reality of Is-
rael's existence and of nego-
tiating cooperatively to
reduce tensions."
