Is Given
Deadline to Get
Off Blacklist

VW

NEW YORK — Volkswa-
gen and the British Lonrho
Group have been given six
months to meet require-
ments for getting their
names off the Arab boycott
commission's blacklist.
Gen. Mohammed Mah-
goub, head of the commis-
sion, said that to gain the
"delisting" the two compa-
nies must cancel their licen-
sing of an unnamed Israeli
company for manufacture
of the Wankel auto engine.
Audi-NSU, a Volkswagen
subsidiary and Lonrho, a
heavy industry and mining
conglomerate are the main
licensers of the engine.

The New York Times
reported that according to
its sources, Israel Ameri-
can Paper Mills is the only
company involved in the
production of the Wankel
engine.

Sources close to the com-
mission's conference, which
is currently revising its
blacklist, said that the Bri-
tish Leyland Motor Corp.,
Ltd., and the Sony Corp.,
the Japanese electronics
company, were being taken
off the list.

Arab Claims to Moslem Sanctity of Jerusalem
Not Proven by Middle East Historical Records

defined religious duties, or
even a symbolic system. It
was an open space called
"Musalla" in Arabic. It
was not accompanied by
any qualitative definition,
formal or symbolic, from
which anything regarding
sanctity can be learnt.

Therefore, when Islam
refers to the sanctity of the
Aqsa, it is applying later
psychological reactions to
an earlier situation.
The third notion which
supposedly offers a theo-
retic base for the concept of
Jerusalem's sanctity, is the
first major monument built

by the new rulers of the
Middle East during the Sev-
enth Century — the Dome
of the Rock. Various sugges-
tions have been'made to ex-
plain its construction.

Goldziher claims that
Abd al-Malik tried to get the
better of his opponent Abd
Allah Ibn al-Zubbair, who
exploited the sanctity of
Mecca for his own political
purposes by making it into
the capital city (in place of
Damascus) and ruling it as
a counter-Caliph.

This act, says Goldziher,
made Abd al-Malik divert
the Hajj from the Kaba of
Mecca to the Sakhra of Je-
rusalem, an act which be-
stowed upon Jerusalem
the status of religious
priority in Islam. This ex-
planation was rejected in a
well-reasoned Efrgument
by Goitein. Abd al-Malik
had no intention of sancti-
fying Jerusalem over
Mecca by building the
Dome of the Rock, and I
think that he did not even

intend to sanctify it in it-
self.

The second explanation
concerns the Israa and Mia-
raj story. That is if a mirac-
ulous nocturnal journey
from Mecca to Jerusalem
did occur, followed by Mu-
hammad's ascent to the
seven heavens, then the
Dome of the Rock was
merely intended to serve as
a memorial construction, a
martyry to immortalize this
important event.

If the Dome of the Rock
was really intended for com-
memoration, why was an-
other structure built next to
it for the same purpose?
This is called Qubbat al-
Miaraj (Dome of Ascension)
to this very day. Explana-
tions offered do not suffice
to confirm the dubious defi-
nition of the Dome of the
Rock as a martyry.

The explanation recently
offered by Oleg Grabar
may, at least partly, settle
the question. In a magistral
analysis of the three inter-

,nal testimonies arising
from the building itself —
location, plan, ornamenta-
tion and inscriptions, Gra-
bar throws light on the po-

anti-Christian
lemical
mission, including the sup-_
posed antithesis of Islam a:,
the last true, universal and
victorious religion.
