Vandals Wreck Jewish Cemetery

MRS. SOSON

According to the Mish.
nah, there are four New
-..al-
Year days in the Jew
endar. They are: thL _iest
day of Nissan, the Civil New
Year; the 15th day of She-
bat, the New Year day fc,T
trees; the first day of Ellul,
New Year day for cattle an6
for tithes; first day of
Tishri, the "birthday" of the
World and the New Year for
mankind.

LONDON — Tourists re-
turning from Czechoslova-
kia report that a number of
marble headstones have
been wrenched from their
base by vandals at the an-
cient Jewish cemetery of
Mikulov, once the seat of
the chief rabbi of Moravia.
The damage was reported
to the local authorities but
the headstones had not been
restored by the end of Au-
gust, the explanation being
that it was impossible for
the lifting machinery re-
quired to manage the slop-
ing area of the cemetery

which is dating back to the
beginning of the 15th Cen-
tury.
Mikulov was one of the
eight historical Jewish cem-
eteries reported by the
Council of Jewish religious
communities to have been
included in a state preserva-
tion scheme in 1974.
