Israelis Charge Syrians Killed War Prisoners

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Shortly after expelling the
Syrians from the Golan
Heights in October 1973,
Israel recovered the bodies
of Israeli soldiers who, judg-
ing by the condition in
which they were found, had
all been murdered and mu-
tilated after being taken
alive.
The American Zionist
Federation last week dis-
tributed a passage, in En-
glish and Arabic, from the
"ficial gazette of the Syrian
ivernment, Al-Jarida

al-Rasmiya, dated July 11,
1974. which has been over-
looked until now which re-
veals the manner in which
some of these Israeli sol-
diers were murdered by
their Syrian captors.
In the course of a debate
in the Syrian National As-
sembly in December 1973,
the Minister of Defense,
Mustafa T'las cited an inci-

dent as an example of "su-
preme valor" in which a re-
cruit was awarded a Medal
of the Republic who mur-
dered 28 Israeli soldiers
himself.

Michigan's Jewish Artists

Editor, the Jewish News:
A brief biographical
sketch and a portrait of
Frederick E. Cohen (?-1858)
appears in "Artists of Early
Michigan,' subtitled "A Bio-
graphical Dictionary of Art-
ists Native To or Active in
Michigan 1701-1900," com-
piled by Arthur Hopkin
Gibson, published by
Wayne State University
Press, Detroit, 1975.
In connection with this
publication, it should be
noted that David Emil
Heineman, father of Jewish
historiography in Michigan,
published in 1915 in "Pub-
lications of the Americcan
Jewish Historical Society"
vol. 23 an article entitled
"Frederick E. Cohen, A Pi-
oneer Michigan Artist." In it
he related Cohen's adven-
tures in a Canadian jail and
in Detroit.

It is noteworthy, though
the artist resided in De-
troit at the time (1850) the
Jewish community was
formed, there is no evi-
dence that he had been
associated with it.

not a pleasant sight to look
at.
The original of this pic-
ture is in the Detroit Insti-
tute of Arts. I placed a copy
in the Jewish archives of the
Detroit Public Library, and
have a plate of the picture in
my possession.

Editor, the Jewish News:
Your reviewer's June 27
article about my recent
book, "America the Beauti-
ful," says the book is
". . . just too personal and
too ordinary for today's
busy reader."
Your reviewer has a right
and responsibility to bring
to your readers an honest
opinion. However, I request
that you forward the pub-
lisher's review copy to your
local Jewish home for the
aged. Someone there might
not be too busy to share
some reminiscences.

It also is worthy of note
that Cohen painted a pic-
ture of Herod Antipas pre-
senting the head of John
"The Paptist" in a huge
wine cup to Salome, the
daughter of Herodias. It is
