Homosexuality Prohibited

BY RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1975, JTA, Inc.)

Homosexuality is prohi-
bited in Jewish tradition
because the Bible explicitly
prohibits one male from
having sexual relationships
with another male (Levi-
ticus 18:22) under the threat
of a death penalty.
Abraham Ibn Ezra com-
ments that homosexuality
was prohibited by Biblical
injunction because it is a
perversion of the nature of
human relationship which
was ordained 'by the Al-
mighty Himself.
In engaging in homosex-
ual relationships one there-
fore perverts and challenges
the intentions of the Lord.
Another reason offered for
prohibiting- homosexuality
is that it is like "pouring out
one's seed in vain" since no
offspring could ever possi-
bly he realized from such a
relationship.

Rabbinic commentaries
considered such actions as
repulsive. Homosexual
activities between two fe-
males (commonly referred

Some claim that this
prohibition comes under the
category of abominable sex
practices attributed to an-
cient Canaanites and an-
cient Egyptians which
sometime served as a cultic
ritual.

Spiritual Elation

Translated from the Hebrew
by Joshua Joyrich (Freidenreikh).

Return, soul, to your tranquility,
return ;

Reject the chains on earth. Per-

And to the Divinity, to God's ver-

Wedding 'Bind'

Some people untie all the
knots of the shoes and cloth-
ing of the bride and groom
before the wedding takes
place.
The mystics claim that
this practice will drive away
the "evil eye" (Ayin Hora) of
the Satan who seeks to
"bind" people into sin and
evil tidings.
Some claim that the prac-
tice indicated that the cou-
ple was being married. on
the basis - of their complete
free will instead of being
"bound" under compulsion.

sented checks to the winning youngsters. From left are Margalite Mizrachi, Yitzhak
Amir, Dana Atia and Zahava Neemani. Margalite Mizrachi's entry has been reprod-

Bar-Ilan University Graduates 750

RA.MAT-GAN — Meir
Danino and his brother
Haim, the youngest of nine
children of a former gar-
dener at Bar-Ilan Univer-
sity, outside of Tel Aviv,
were among the 750 recipi-
ents of degrees at the uni-
versity's recent graduation
ceremony. Meir, 22, received
a BS in physics and Haim,
27, an MS, also in physics.
Haim was horn in Mor-
occo from which his parents
came to Israel in 1951. Meir
was horn in a but in the
ma'ahara transit camp at
Zichron Yaacov where the
family spent its first diffi-
cult years in the country,
before moving to Bnei Brak,
where they have lived ever
since.
The father, a pious man,
worked very hard so that all
his children could study.
Even when conditions were
difficult he refused to let his
children go out to work.
When the father died
seven years ago, the older
brothers and sister helped
to put the two youngest
sons through university,
choosing Bar-Ilan, Is-
rael's only religiously-or-
iented university. They
excelled in their studies
and managed to obtain
several scholarships.
Among the 750 other re-
cipients of degrees at Bar-
Ilan University this year are
18 Arab students. Another
four Arab students have
received teachers' certifi-
cates. In addition, the first
24 graduates of the univer-
sity's Yaacov Herzog School
of Law have been granted
the bachelor of laws degree
this year. Though only
founded in 1970, the school
has already made its mark
on the Israeli legal scene
through innovative teaching
methods and aims. One of
its major objectives is to in-
tegrate the study of tradi-
tional Jewish law into the
study of each parallel area
of the civil law.
At the graduation cere-
mony, honorary degrees of
Doctor of Philosophy were
conferrred on Paul Zuck-
erman, chairman of the
world fund-raising com-
mittee of _ the Jewish
Agency and former chair-
man of the UJA, and
Sarah Heyog, one of the
main figures in Jewish
community activities in
Israel.
Detroit Friends of Bar-

Ilan University will have
their annual dinner, honor-
ing- Paul Zuckerman, 6 p.m.
Sept. 18 at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek. Dr. Leon Fill is gen-
eral dinner chairman and

Zvi Tomkiewicz is executive
director of the Detroit com-
mittee. Phillip Stollman is
chairman of the global
board of trustees of the uni-
versity.
