LONDON — Jacqueline
Tabick, 26, dislikes all the
publicity given to her since
she became the first woman
rabbi to be ordained in
Great Britain.
Mrs. Tabick objects to
"becoming a symbol of In-
ternational Women's Year."
She started rabbinical stud-
ies after studying history at
University College, London,
and specializing in educa-
tion at Manchester Univer-
sity.
The new woman rabbi,
unlike the six other rabbis
who were ordained with her
at St. Johns Wood Liberal
Synagogue, has not been
given a congregation of her
own.
Mrs. Tabick has become
education officer at the
West London Reform Syn-
agogue and will decide on
a future career next year
when her husband, Larry,
finishes his rabbinical
studies.
She
disagrees
with
charges that Reform syn-
agogues' use of English in
services indicates they are
more assimilated. "I think
our people can cope better,
because they can better un-
derstand the service. After
all, the fact that people
come to the synagogues in-
dicates how much they wish

to identify with the Jewish
tradition," she said.
The first Anglo-Jewish
woman rabbi was initially.
drawn to studies by a desire
to know more about Juda-
ism. She believes that the
role of rabbi differs in keep-
ing with the composition of
his or her congregation.
"It is someone to whom
people can turn if in trouble.
It is someone who can help
others by a greater knowl-
edge of Jewish law," she
said. Mrs. Tabick does not
see the rabbi as "the guide
to the perplexed," but only
as one of them.
In her view, the British
community looks too much
to their rabbis as perform-
ing a priestly role, more
within the church concept
than within Jewish tradi-
tion.
She is against intellectual
inflexibility in religious
matters. She says: "There is
no absolute answer to find-
ir.-r, ways to God. We must
beware being set in our
ways.
While Mrs. Tabick is the
first woman rabbi, the Leo
Baeck College will ordain a
second woman next year.
Judaica, is the amount
determined by law as the
minimum that the wife is
entitled to receive from her
husband or his estate on
the dissolution of the mar-
riage.
If the husband so wishes,
he may add to the minimum
amount of the ketuhha, an
increment. The general cus-
tom at the present time is to
grand the increment and
this is also reflected in the
standard form of the ke-
tuhha deed.
In addition, there is also
fixed in the ketubba deed
the amount which the bus-
hand, of his own free will
and by virtue of his under-
taking under the ketubba
deed, renders himself liable
to return to his wife, when
he pays her the ketubba as
the equivalent of her dowry.
The husband's liability- to
return this amount becomes
a monetary debt.
In cases where the wife
"forfeits" her ketubba the
effect, in general, is that the
husband is released from
his liability to pay her those
portions of the ketuhha

$41,000 for Israel
WASHINGTON — Led
by a grandmother in her
70's, a Bnai Brith Youth
Organization "Walk for Is-
rael" raised a record $41,000
here.
The
annual
event,
trimmed this year from 25
miles to 16 miles, brought
out 1,088 walkers, including
200 BBYO members.
Mrs. Mimi Cornfield, who
has 12 grandchildren, set a
stroller's pace, completed
six kilometers and raised
$500, more than any other
entrant.
Businessmen and others
in the community sponsored
the walkers, agreeing to
contribute a set amount for
each completed kilometer.

Reform Judaism has
dropped the use of the
traditional ketubba. In-
stead, most Reform rabbis
issue a marriage certifi-
cate drawn up by the Cen-
tral Conference of Ameri-
can Rabbis (Reform). The
certificate makes no refer-
ence to the halakic formu-
lations of the traditional
ketubba.
.The wife's rights under

nance from the estate of her
