signed as chairman of the
Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion's Retirement and insur-
ance Committee after
nearly two decades of serv-
ice in the position. an-
nounced Federation presi-
dent Mandell L. Berman.
The committee reviews
policy and is the central in-
surance authority for Fed-
eration's member agencies.
Among the committee's
innovative programs under
Siegel's chairmanship is a
Workmen's Compensation
Fund which has become a
model program in Michigan.
Siegel, who is a director of
the United Jewish Chari-
ties, was presented with a
special award at the UJC
meeting at which his resig-
nation from the chairman-
ship was announced.

United Jewish Charities'
Fred M. Butzel Memorial
Building Committee, an-
nounced UJC president
Alfred L. Deutsch.
Farbman succeeds A. Ar-
nold Agree as head of the
committee which manages
the building in which the
Jewish Welfare Federation
and several other communal
organizations have offices.
Agree is retiring after 13
years on the building com-
mittee.

Dennis J. Rice has been
named executive director of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
Rice has been director of
both Metropolitan Detroit
and Michigan Councils of
Bnai Brith for the past
three years.
He is a past-president of
the Albert D. Tucker Lodge
of Bnai Brith and held nu-
merous offices and commit-
tee chairmanships in the
Metropolitan Detroit Coun-
cil.
He is also a member of
the internal relations com-
mittee of the Jewish Com-
munity Council.

REHOVOT — A 10-day
advanced course on biologi-
cal membranes — which are
of significance in such
spheres as cancer research,
immunology and develop-
mental biology — was con-
ducted at the Weizmann
Institute of Science.
The participants, 50
scientists from the U.S., Eu-
rope, Australia, Japan and
Israel attended some 30 lec-
tures on various aspects of
cell membrane structure
and dynamics, with empha-
sis on the role of cellular
membranes in processes
associated with malignancy
and immune response.

Trifa of the Romanian Or-
thodox Church, has issued a
12-page statement blaming,
Jewish organizations and
communist officials in Ro-
mania for U.S. charges
against him which may lead
to the loss of his U.S. citi-
zenship.
Refusing to talk to the
press, Archbishop Trifa is-
sued a statement saying the
charges against him were a
plot. The U.S. suit charges
that he lied about his war-
time political dealings dur-
ing immigration proceed-
ings.
Jewish groups have
charged that he led a pro-
gram in Romania in 1941 as
head of the "Iron Guard."
