Voters in Oak Park on
Monday approved a 1.5-mill
proposal for school opera-
tion to run for 12 years. The
proposal included a renewal
of one mill expiring, plus a
half-mill increase offset by
lower debt retirement.
In the school board race,
incumbents Marilyn Mazel
and Irving Rosen have been
returned to office, each for
four-year terms.
In Southfield, voters de-
feated two separate millage
proposals. Arthur H. Fields
was elected to a four-year
seat on the school board.
West Bloomfield voters
defeated a $610,000 bond
issue which would have per-
mitted the district to pur-
chase a new site for a mid-
dle school and high school.
James L. Rosenbaum and
Leonard Grossman were
elected to four-year terms
on the board of education.

Editor, The Jewish News:
Recently the House of
Representatives in Lansing
voted a bill (No. 4239) revis-
ing Michigan's inheritance
tax laws, with Section 47 in
it which will dispossess a
widow: what she had
owned, jointly with her hus-
band, she will now inherit
upon a payment of taxes.
I can think of three argue-
ments against the bill.
First, the fact that an ex-
isting law dates back to 1899
is not a good enough reason
for changing it. Secondly,
the need to raise taxes
should not be regarded ax-
iomatically. Especially,
since the voters of this state
have clearly indicated in the
last election that they want
taxes to be reduced.
The third and most pow-
erful, I believe, argument
against House Bill 4239 is a
moral one. It is contained in
the old biblical injunctions:
"Ye shall not afflict any
widow or fatherless child.
If you afflict them in any
wise, and they cry at all
unto me, I will surely hear
their cry; and my wrath
shall wax hot . . ."
Exodus 22:22-24

"Thou shall not pervert
judgment of the strange
nor of the fatherless, n
take a widow's raiment t
pledge."
Deuteronomy 24:1

The bill is now before ti
State Senate and, hopeful!,
our legislators there will nc
let it pass.
