HOLLYWOOD — "The
Day of the Locust," is Bri-
tish director John Schlesin-
ger's seventh motion picture
and the first one made in
Hollywood.
His first, "A Kind of Lov-
ing," which introduced Alan
Bates, was photographed in
the coal district of the En-
glish midlands 13 years ago;
followed by "Billy Liar" in
1963, the film which
brought Julie Christie to the
attention of the public. In
1965, Schlesinger guided
Ms. Christie to an Academy
Award as best actress in
"Darling;" two years later,
he directed the epic, "Far
From the Madding Crowd."
Schlesinger's first U.S.
production, "Midnight Cow-
boy," was shot in New York.
It won Oscars for best pic-
ture; best direction, and one
for Waldo Salt for best
screenplay. Salt who was
"blacklisted" during the
McCarthy days now is cred-
ited with the cinematic

story, "The Day of the Lo-

the spectacular finish, a
nightmarish, apocalyptic

Schlesinger terms the film
a classic though admitting
that the book is felt to be
pessimistic and negative.
