The Yom Kippur War
was of longer duration,
and so was the citizen ef-
fort to bring comfort to the
exhausted army. But as
the men started coming
home, the little stands
shut down. Not so the Na-
tanya shack. The ladies
felt .the need was still
there. "I have never seen
so many soldiers moving
about as in our little coun-
try," said Mrs. Gross.
"Sometimes I think it is to
confuse the enemy."

A roughly boarded shel-
ter, the Natanya kiosk has a
cold-water sink, a two-
burner stove to make Turk-
ish-style black coffee and,
thanks to a generous donor,
an awning. There are no toi-
let facilities.

Coffee, sugar and juice
concentrate are supplied by
the Soldiers' Welfare Com-
mittee. Another donor con-
tributes bread and cake. The
ladies who work the various
shifts from 8:30 a.m. to 7
p.m. are responsible for the
spreads that go on the open-
faced sandwiches.
It's not uncommon to see
the women "shlepping"
their donations on the bus.
Mrs. Gross said they have
become "expert shnorrers."

Two of her three-woman
group visit hotels on Mon-
day mornings and come
away with Bar Mitzva and
wedding leftovers.

Despite the cost and trou-
ble involved, the women are
determined to keep their lit-
tle shack open. Rough esti-
mates put the monthly cost
at IL 30,000 ($5,000), not
including private donations
— a monstrous sum in cost-
conscious Israel.

result was a contribution of

LONDON (JTA) — An
Anglo-Jewish leader has
responded sharply to the
recent criticism by -British
Chief Rabbi Immanuel Jd-
koboviti of the state of the
leadership of British Jewry.
Captain David Tack, out-
going chairman of the Asso-
ciation of Jewish Ex-Serv-
icemen and Women (AJEX)
told the organization's an-
nual conference that Rabbi
Jakobovitz's remarks were
harsh and tactless.
The Chief Rabbi, in a re-
cent speech, described Bri-
tish-Jewish leadership as
"archaic, rigid, remote and
irrevelant" and claimed that
it "has alienated not only
