Concert, UNESCO Protest Highlight the Vienna Season

By MARGUERITE CHAJES

Editor's Note: Marguer-
ite Kozenn Chajes lives
part of every year" in
Vienna. She is a professor
of music in German and
Austrian universities and
is a recognized authority

on musical history. This
article is based on her per-
sonal involvement in musi-
cal functions in Vienna.
VIENNA — Two impor-
tant cultural events took
place here during the past
weeks; one atthe largest au-
ditorium (the famous Mu-

sikverein, o'er 100 years
old, where the greatest art-
ists have appeared) and the
other at the "theater in the
Josefstadt," that once be-
longed to Max Reinhardt
and where his great tradi-
tion is still carried on.
The first concert involved
Gideon Kremer, 27, a violin-
ist born in Riga, where he
studied with his father. Aft-
erwards he became the mas-
ter student of the late David
Oistrach in Moscow. ,

MIDNIGHT MADNESS SALE

At international competi-
tions Kremer won - numer-
ous prizes. He plays a rare
Guadanini violin, inherited
from his grandfather.

Karl Loebl, one of Vien-
na's leading music critics
wrote about Kremer and
his accompanist Oleg Mei-
senberg: "A spectacularly
exciting technique is evi-
dent; Kremer feels the
composition, breathes it
and thinks with it! Oleg
Meisenberg was his ideal
partner, with a fabulous
technique and an astound-
ing touch and culture.
Both are one heart, one
soul and with the same
musicianship! The audi-
ence was carried away! So
was I!"

The second event of quite
a different, but not less
emotional character was
_ _sponsored by the Austrian
PEN Club. It was a demon-
stration against the exclu-
sion of Israel from the
UNESCO. The theatre was
sold out as soon as the pres-
entation was announced!
Vienna's leading actors par-
ticipated and read highly
dramatic and stirring, works
--by Jewish and Israeli au-
thors.

A special treat were three
poems by Marc Chagall.
Shim. Shalom's essay -"My
way to 'Zion" was also very
touching. Fritz Muliar,
Vienna's noted actor-come-
dian read stories from
Ephraim Kishon's latest
book "No oil,, Moses."
After the performance,
the listeners signed books of
protest to be sent to
UNESCO headquarters in
Paris.
