Arabs are noted for their
hospitality. So the legend
has it. The late Dr. Nelson
Glueck, the one-time presi-
dent of the Hebrew Union
College, famous for his ar-
chaeological work — espe-
cially noted for his discovery
of the site of the copper
mines of King Solomon —
had an interesting little ex-
perience with this hospital-
ity.
One day Dr. Glueck was a
guest at dinner of an Arab
chieftain. Everything went
along breezily until the end
of the dinner. Then Dr.
Glueck noted his host be-
came very taciturn and even
looked a bit sullen. Later he
discovered that he had com-
mitted what the Arabs re-
garded as a social sin — he

had not belched at the end
of the dinner.
The belch signifies to the
host that the guest has not
been shortchanged — that
he has had a fully satisfying
meal.
The one-time veteran
Zionist, Julius Haber,
wanted to rent an Arab-
owned building in Jerusa-
lem for a movie picture
house. The owner invited
him to his home.
"Let us have some coffee,"
said the Arab owner. The
coffee was brought and the
two drank. "How much rent
do you want?" asked Haber.
"Listen," said the Arab,
"you want the building? It is
yours. Why talk about it?
Let's talk about Jerusalem
instead. The city is growing,
isn't it?"
So the two talked about

NEW YORK — Against
the background of today's
economy and the continuing
Mideast crisis, the spring
quarterly board and na-
tional committee meetings
of the Council of Jewish Fe-
ferations and Welfare
Funds were held recently in
Atlanta at the Fairmont
Hotel where Jewish com-
munal leaders and federa-
tion executives from North
America assessed the full
range of concerns and prior-
ities of their communities at
home, overseas, and in Is-
rael.

Jewish Education
for Disabled Urged

NEW YORK — Based on
the belief that a quality
Jewish education is as inte-
gral to the development of a
learning disabled child as it
is for any other Jewish
youngster, the Board of
Jewish Education of
Greater New York has
started a new special educa-
tion program, which will
provide both assistance to
ongoing Jewish special edu-
cation programs, and organ-
ize new classes where
needed.

Through a grant from the
program development fund
of the Federation of Jewish
Philanthropies, the special
education program has thus
far distributed grants to 11
Jewish education programs
for children with learning
disabilities at schools lo-
cated throughout Greater
New York.

U.S. anti-gift credo.
Perhaps Arab hospitality
might better be shown by
not demanding such exces-
sive prices for their oil. The
price of a commodity, as one
economist recently noted,
should reflect the cost o
production. However, the
price demanded by the Ar-
abs for oil is put at 40 times
the cost of production.

of February, have raised
almost $230 million for lo-

At the meeting of the

Illegal Settlers

Jailed for Break-In >-...

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Police arrested 35 members
of the militant Gush Emu-
nim settlers movement after
they tried to break into the.
prime minister's office
where the cabinet was meet-
ing in special session on the
current negotiations for a
second-stage disengagement
accord in Sinai.

All were released after
questioning. The militants
were part of a group of
about 60 Gush Emunim fol-
lowers who attempted to
establish a settlement near
Sebastia on the West Bank
west of Nablus but were for-
cibly removed by soldiers.
