Father went down to the
market place.
He hustled and tussled in
the world's rat race.
He was told by a skeptic,
"Man, foolish man, come'
out of the cold.
Spend your money on a

brand new coat.
Why should you buy a little
goat?"
Father said: "A t one time

was sung to children afraid
of the dark. When the world
grew stark grown-ups also
sang it to drive away fear of
the demons who prowl-in
the human soul and come
out to howl in the night.
Therefore, over valley and
height, through brush and
through briar, I'll -wing in
my flight from -lower to
higher. And when I find the
little goat, I'll say —
"Little goat, little goat,
please come our way. Tarry
and stay, bring a good day.
In this world errors and er-
rors create many terrors. So
change and erase, leave not
a trace until everything's
right 'and the day becOmes
bright."
But Ms. Angel with long
red hair and long pink -wings
-whispered to father: "What
will men do with the little
bright goat? They'll place all
their sins on its little bowed
head. Thus their own signs
they -will shed,'-but the road
of evil they'll continue to
tread."
"It's a shame," said
father. "The little goat is
Much too tiny for all the
sins thatvmen pile on scape-
goats rather than face their
own wrongs with maturity
and responsibility. But I
want the little goat."
"Indeed?" said Ms. Angel.
"On that day when -men are
-willing to resotre 'sanctity to
life, on that day — get into
a boat.
Float to the land where men
grow up.
Look where lush grass whis-
pers to a rippling stream,
Where low waves murmur
to listening pebbles,
Where a warm breeze shel-
ters a slumbering ant.
There the little goat sings—
`Little boy, little girl, come
into my arms.
'I'll hug you, I'll kiss you, -I'll
priase all your chairms.
`I'll love you, I'll save you
from evil that harms.'
"In the land of growing
up, the palm leaf grows,
new life flOws, bitterness
ebbs, sorrow crumbles. Re -
pose comes in a gentle flood
that will cleanse your blood
while you , dance among the
fallen teaves of an evil-past
that is gone. It will seem a
million years since man be-
came the enemy of-man. A
million years since inhu-
manity scorched life into an
unworthy thing.
"There in the land of grow-
ing up, you'll sing —
Little goat, little goat, are
you black, are -you white?
Neither! — You're bright.
And who's afraid of the
deep dark night."
So father bOught the little
goat for two zuzim, which
means — for two silver
coins of love, .and the little
'goat wasn't used as a scape-
goat any more.
Had gadya — one little
goat. •

The Old Prayers
The old prayers, which go
back to the earliest days of
our history and in which our
ancestors poured out their
hearts to God, awaken our

the religious sentiments
that have come down to us
from the ages.
