The publication of books
by and about Martin Buber
continues unabated since
his death in 1965 as it did in
his lifetime. Most of his
writings have, by this time,
appeared in paperback edi-
tions.
"The Hebrew Hunianism

bitious undertaking, and is
additionaiproof that Buber
is one of the most seminal
thinkers on Jewish and
'universal then as in the 20th
Century.
Practically every aspect
of Buber's thought is ana-
lyzed by Grete Schaeder
(translated by Noah-Jacobs
and published by Wayne
State University Press).
The sources of his ideas,
his contacts with thinkers
both past and present, and
their past in shaping Bub-
er's world view are dealt
with in considerable detail.

No War Seen
if Efforts Fail

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Former Defense Minister
Moshe Dayan told Hebrew
University students last
week that a failure to reach
a new agreement with the
Arabs did not mean a war.
would break out, although
tension in the Mideast
would grow.
"We are closer now to a
peace settlement with the
Arabs than we have ever
been in the past," he said,
adding that this did not
mean a settlement was cer-
tain.

This is the theme of "The
Hebrew Humanism of Mar-
tin Buber." A good example
is one of Buber's earliest
works, "Addresses on Juda-
ism" where he calls for "the
renewal of the entire man".
The Jewish renaissance of
this century had to result in
a growing "self-determina-
tion of the national soul"
and a new humanitarian
culture for the Jewish peo-
ple.
Judaism, says Buber, is to
be understood as what takes
place within man as well as
between man and God.
Buber is best known for
his book "I and Thou,"
where "Thou" is not only a
human being, but the
"eternal Thou" as well. Life
is an unending dialogue be-
tween man and man as well
as between Man and God.
Man is an essential partner
in this dialogue.

gious humanist it means
that the emphasis is on the
human being in relation to
God, to the universe, and
to human culture and civi-
lazation. In the case of
Hebrew humanism, the
roots of the person's out-
look on life lie deeply
embedded in the Jewish
tradition — the faith, his-
tory, and future of Israel.

'Vatican to Include
Israel in Dialogue'

CINCINNATI • — The
head of the Natiohal Confer-
ence of Catholic Bishops
predicted that the Vatican
would include the question
of Israel as part of its new
dialogue with the Jewish
community.
"As Catholics learn by
NN, hat essential traits Jews
define themselves in light of
their religious experience,
one of these traits will be an
understanding of the link
between the people and the
land," explained Joseph L.
Bernardin, Archbishop of
the Roman Catholic Arch-
diocese of Cincinnati and
president of the National
Conference of Catholic Bish-
ops and United States Cath-
olic Conference.

National Federation of
Temple Brotherhoods, will
receive a special, citation
for . a $5,000 fellowship.

This is not merely phi-
losophy. For Buber all of
history is the arena where
man meets God. The.Bible,
the fountainhead of reli-
gious Judaism (beautifully
translated into German by
Franz Rosenzweig and
Martin Buber) is for
Buber a record . of the dia-
logue between God and the
Jew as man, and between
_God and the Jewish com-
munity of faith.

Buber's dedication to
Zionism meant more than
the creation of a Jewish
State with a Jewish major-
ity. Here too, amidst the
maneuvering of political
parties and platforms, he
was primarily interested in
the regeneration of the indi-
vidual Jew, which -"must
take place within the larger
sphere of a renewal of the
people."
The fact that Zionism
produced. the Halutz was an
accomplishment of primary
importance. because the
Halutz not only opened up
the country of palestine, but
was the pioneer of a new life
form.
This was what gave Zion-
ism its authenticity and its
historical justification. This
type of humanism was for
Buber not only a matter of
personal preference but the
result of his interpretation
of Israel's history, religion,
and what Israel stood for
vis-a-vis humanity.
The message of Hasid-

ism is one that Buber pre-
sented and emphasized in
a number of his books and
in almost everything he
