was decided to consult other
engineers and' agronomists
before deciding whether or
not to 011 out the grass.
Meanwhile, Israeli politi-
cal satirists and cartoonists
are having a field day with
the rabbis' debate. Letters
to the editor began to ap-
pear suggesting neither cut-
ting nor leaving the grass
alone, but trimming it from
time to time. Others took
sides with the rabbis.

Asked what he would do

Himmelfarb said, "Al-
though the rest of the world
has had a, population explo-
sion, the Jews have had a
population implosion. There
are 250,000 fewer Jews in
America today than there
were a generation ago.
"If not for birth control
practices on the part of Jew-
ish women, and had our
Jews proliferated at the
same rate as other groups in
the American community,
there would today be a Jew-,
ish population in this coun
try of eight million -instead
of less than six million.

JERUSALEM (JTA).-
The grass that grows be-
tween the weathered stones
of the Western Wall has
sparked a new dispute be-
tween Israel's perennially
feuding Askenazic and Se-
phardic chief rabbis.
Chief Rabbi 'Shlomo
Goren ruled several days
ago that the grass cannot be
removed. His Sephardic
counterpart, Chief Rabbi
Ovadia Yosef, ruled that if
the grass endangered the
Wall, it may be removed.
Both rabbis issued their
contradictory rulings after
consulting halakhic sources..
The problem arose re-
cently when engineers
warned the ministry for re-
ligious affairs that the con-
tinuing spread of grass
roots might cause the an-
cient stones to shift and
eventually collapse.
Rabbi Dov _Perla, the
ministry official in charge
of holy places, consulted
his own engineers who
