Bergman Refuses to Appear Before Senate Nursing Home Subcommittee

NEW YORK (JTA) — Rab-
bi Bernard Bergman refused
. Tuesday to reappear before
a Senate subcommittee inves-
tigating nursing home oper-
ations in New York. His at-
torney, Nathan Lewin, of
Washington, D.C., said Berg-
man was withdrawing his of-
fer to cooperate with the sub-
committee on long-term care
because "this committee is
nc ducting an investiga-
nursing homes but an
inquisitory investigation into
one man, Dr. Bergman."
Sen. Frank E. Moss (D-
Utah), the subcommittee's
chairman, who said he was
surprised by Bergman's fail-
ure to appear, said the sub-
committee would see a court
order citing Bergman for
"contempt of Congress."
Moss said the subpoena under
which Bergman appeared

Jan: 21 was still valid for
Tuesday.
Lewin challenged this and
contended that Bergman had
not been directed to attend
Tuesday and had only been
requested. He challenged the
legality of the subcommittee
investigation and the sub-
poenas.
He said Bergman had ori-
ginally agreed to cooperate
but was withdrawing this of-
fer because although the rec-
ords of 41 nursing home op-
erators had been subpoened
only Bergman was question-
ed. ,,

it could not take testimony
on every nursing home.
Lewin had earlier challeng-
ed a subpoena asking the
American Bank and Trust
Co. to present Bergman's
Bank records saying it was
an invasion into Bergman's
privacy.

"We're not after Dr. Berg-
man," Moss said. "We're not
after anyone." He said the
subcommittee was only try-
ing to find the truth out about
nursing home operations in
order to propose legislation
to improve nursing home op-
erations. But he said if the
subcommittee found viola-
tions of law it would turn

Jewish Teens Altruistic, Liberal

By BEN GALLOB

(Copyright 1975, JTA, Inc.)

A poll of several hundred
Jewish teenagers found them
to be more altruistic, more
politically liberal and less
concerned about wealth than
their peers generally.
The findings emerged from
a comparison of a B n ai
Brith Youth Organization
poll of high school sopho-
mores and juniors with an
American Council of Edu-
cation study of incoming col-
lege freshmen.
The poll found that more
than seven out of ten of the
Jewish teenagers supported
"preferential treatment" for
the disadvantaged, a concept
which the adult Jewish com-
munity has been fighting as
likely to lead to discrimina-
tion in reverse. About a
third of the freshmen sup-
ported preferential treat-
ment.

Half of the Jewish teen-
agers described themselves
as "liberal" in their politi-
cal views.
About 31 percent of the
teenagers thought it essen-
tial to be "well off economi-
cally," compared to 55 per-
cent among the college
freshmen: But the tradition-
al Jewish interest in self-
employment surfaced in the
teenage poll. Some 73 per-
cent of the BBYO members
said they considered it im-
portant "to be successful in
my own business".
Two-thirds of the teen-
agers felt it was important to
keep up with political af-
fairs, compared with about
43 percent of the freshmen.
Almost similar majorities
supported job equality for
women, higher taxes for the
wealthy, and legalization of
marijuana.

Washington within the next

date for the visit has yet
been set.
Israel has asked the United
States for $2.5 billion worth
of aid.
In Washington, State De-

had no information about re-

that the United States was
delaying shipments of war-
planes to Israel pending the
arrival of Secretary of State
Henry A. Kissinger during
his upcoming Middle East
visit.
According to Israel Radio,
the withholding of the wea-
pons was designed to give
Kissinger leverage for ob-
taining concessions from Is-
rael for negotiations on new
withdrawal agreements.
A Pentagon spokesman also
