Channel 56 to Air `Zalmen' Play

This Week's Radio and Television Programs

HEBRON (ZINS) — The
mayor of Hebron, Sheik Mu-
hammad Ali Jaabari, peti-
tioned Defense Minister Shi-
mon Peres by letter to for-
bid the Herut Party from
holding its scheduled nation-
al conference in his city.
The Arab mayor stated
that holding such a conven-
tion in Hebron would be in
contravention of the law, be-
cause Hebron is an "Arab
city and is a part of the King
dom of Jordan." Jaabari fur-
ther declared that a Herut
gathering in Hebron would
be offensive to Arab feel-
ings and would threaten the
peace and security of the
area

THEATER IN AMERICA

Richard Bauer, left, and Joseph Wiseman portray the
roles of Zalmen and the rabbi, respectively, in the Theater
in America production of Elie Wiesel's drama, "Zalmen or
the Madness of God," to be aired 9 p.m. Wednesday on
Channel 56 (wrvs). The play centers on Zalmen, a Russian
Jew, who urges his rabbi to speak out during High Holy Day
services at which "outsiders" will be present. Wiesel de-
scribed this new work as "my song of songs to the spirit of
resistance and defense . . . to the joy and celebration of
Soviet Jewry."

berg, UJA general chairman
said, "Having witnessed the
enormous impact on the au-
dience, I want to encourage
every Jew in America to
watch the play. It is a testi-
mony to the endurance of the
Jewish spirit even under the
most oppressive circumstan-
ces.
"Although the play deals
with the strangulation of the
Jews in Russia shortly after
Stalin's death, its message
is supremely relevant for all
,Jews everywhere — no one
should miss the opportunity
of watching it," Lautenberg
said.
With actor Joseph Wise-
man as the rabbi, "Zalmen
or The Madness of God" is
performed by Washington's
renowned Arena Stage Com-
pany, which premiered the
play in the U. S. capital last
spring.
