Saudis Publicity Campaign Brewing

WASHINGTON — Accord-
ing to columnist Jack Ander-
son, there is a $7.7 million
publicity campaign afoot in
the U.S. to glorify Saudi
Arabia's royal family.
The campaign, if it be-
comes effective, will use U.S.
publications, TV shows, col-
leges and the opera for its
purpose. It is being pushed
by Raymond Mason, the head
of a billion-dollar American
oil conglomerate known as
the Charter Corp. He has re-
cently been jetting to the
Mideast in his private plane
to work out oil deals with
King Faisal and other Saudi
notables.
The oil deals, though, are
dependent on Mason's person-
al ties with the Saudi royal
family. According to Ander-
son, "He is in a position to
shower them with favorable
publicity. For he owns 10
percent of the stock (and
has an option to buy another
28 per cent) in Downe Com-
munications, which controls
Family Weekly, American
Home and Ladies' Home
Journal, plus a string of radio
stations.
(Time Magazine named
King Faisal its Man of the
Year this week.)
There already have been
two articles in the Family
Weekly plus a Sunday sup-
plement which featured a
color photograph of Prince
Fahad on the cover.
Mason's proposal, the
"Saudi Arabian Public Rela-
tions Program 1975," seeks
to include the following:

• That the Saudis would
bestow $1 million on a new
production of the Metropoli-
tan Opera's "Aida," a classic
about the romance and cul-
ture of old Egypt;
• That King Faisal would
contribute another $4 mil-
lion for four professorships
"to promote understanding
between the peoples of Saudi
Arabia and the U.S.;
• That the Saudis would
donate $1.8 million for a 16-
page supplement, which
would be distributed in 19
newspapers. It would feature
Faisal on the cover in glow-
ing color and would put
"emphasis on this impressive
sphere of influence";
• That three Saudi
princes, a sheikh and a Saudi
oil official would take a
swinging tour of the U.S. in
Mason's private plane, with
the tour featuring rides in
$200-a-day limousines, rooms
at $300-a-night hotel suites
and meals costing $200 a
day. Mason also will try to
get them on TV shows such
as "Today," "Tonight" and
"Face the Nation";
• That a $279,500 supple-
ment for Time Magazine
would be prepared and that
Mason would also pay for a
large book on Saudi Arabia.
