The term "Kabala" is
used to represent the general
body of mystical literature of
the Jewish people. In this
context this body of literature
can run all the way back to
Biblical literature and all the
way forward to current Hasi-
dic lore.
In a narrower sense, some
confine this to the medieval
and post-medieval mystic
traditions. There are a num-
ber of explanations for the
meaning of the word "Kab-

Pro-Arab Israeli Professor
Stirs Academic. Freedom Debate
By MOSHE RON
Jewish News Special Israel
Correspondent
TEL AVIV—In Jewish his-
tory there are known eases of
converts, traitors, and 'rene-
gades, who have caused trou-
bles and helped spread atroc-
ity stories about Jews. -
It is hard to believe that an
important professor of the
Hebrew University, Israel
Shachak, travels all over the
world and spreads horror
propaganda against Israel.
He takes part in anti-Israeli
demonstrations with Arabs
and the Palestinian terrorists.
He accuses the Israeli gov-
ernment of waging a racist
Nazi policy towards the Ar-
abs. He tells about martyr-
dom of Arab political prison-
ers and about Israeli soldiers
murdering Syrian prisoners
during the Yam Kippur War.
In Israeli universities, pro-
fessors may take a sabbatical
year to travel abroad and con-
tact others in his field. Two
years ago Professor Shachak
made use of such a year to
demonstrate with Palestinian
Arabs in London in front of
the Israeli Embassy, and ho-
tels where Israeli political
leaders were lodging.
The Israeli taxpayer helped
finance this professor during
his sabbatical abroad while
he waged propaganda attacks
against the state of Israel and
its government.
The dean of the law faculty
at the University of Tel Aviv,
Prof. Ammon Rubinstein,
wrote a strongly-worded arti-
cle against Prof, Shackak.
He asked why the authorities
in Istael tolerate his activity,
and do not take steps against
him.
In recent months Prof. Sha-
chak was active in Holland,
taking part in public demon-
strations against Israel and
at the same time he was pro-
moted to full professor by the
Hebrew University in Jerusa-
lem.
Prof. Rubinstein argued
that one cannot define Prof.
Shachak's anti-Israel activity
as academic freedom. Ac-
cording to Israel law, the
minister of interior has the
right to cancel Prof. Shac-
hak's passport and Israeli cit-
izenship.
He can be charged with
damaging the interests of the
state and its security.
The rector of the Hebrew
University, Michael Rabin,
and some professors came
out in declarations against the
article of Prof. Rubenstein.
They argued that Prof.
Shachak is a known expert
for 'organic chemistry, the
students are very much satis-
fied with his lectures and up-
holding the principal of aca-
demic freedom • they take no
interest in his political views
and his activity abroad.
Prof. Rubinstein reacted
strongly in a second article.
He maintained that Prof.
Shachak appeared before a
sub-committee of the U. S.
Congress and accused Israel
of introducing racism and
radicalism by establishing
Jewish settlements in the oc-
cupied territories.
He also held public appear-
ances in Holland against Ia-
rael and caused great dam-
age to the Israeli information
service.
Prof. Rubinstein accused
the Hebrew University of
helping anti-Israeli propa-
ganda by upgrading Prof.
Shachak. .
Prof. Rubinstein argues
that the hosts of Prof. Shac-
hak abroad—Arab and Anti-
Semite circles — know very
well that he is a professor of
the Hebrew University and
make use of it in their propa-
ganda.
