Humanizes American Authors
Former Detroiter Charles
A. Madison's new book, "Irv-
ing to Irving" (R. B. Bowker
Co.) will prove delightful for
students of American litera-
ture.
The retired Holt, Rinehart
and Winston editor of college
publications is the author of
numerous books on Yiddish
literature, the Yiddish press
and American publishing.
His new book, "Irving to
Irving", deals with 28 famous
American authors during the
period 1800 to 1974, and their
relationships with their pub-
lishers.

Madison begins his book
with a chapter on Washing-
ton Irving and James Feni-
more Cooper, and ends it
with a discussion of Clifford
irving's hoax biography of
Howard Hughes.
Not only are these famous
authors highlighted, but the
largest publishing houses in
the land are also seen in this
fascinating documentary.
Madison's final chapter
gives an enlightening view of
the Clifford Irving affair of
three years ago, in which the
author swindled- hundreds of
thousands of dollars from
McGraw-Hill for a fake auto-
biography of recluse billion-
aire Howard Hughes.
He not only tells of the
thinking and plotting of Irv-
ing and his accomplice lich-
ard Suskind, but also of the
reactions of the publishing ex-
ecutives at McGraw-Hill and
Hughes' representatives.
Madison reprints a state-
ment Irving made to Sus-
kind, which not only shoWs
the thinking of the man and
the executives he-was swind-
ling, but is also representa-
tive. of the many personal
glimpses that Madison places
before the reader:
"Months later, when Rich-
ard Suskind, whom Irving had
engaged as his researcher,
Wondered about the naivete
of the McGraw-Hill people,
Irving explained it astutely
with an irony that underlined
the truth:
`Because they believe.
First they wanted to believe,
and now they had to believe.
They want to believe because
it's such a coup for them, it's
wierd and wild, it's Howard
Hughes and the Richest Man
in the World and they're per-
sonally, vicariously in ca-
hoots with him . . . I'm their
buffer between reality and
fantasy.
`It's a fairy tale, a dream.
And the beauty part for them
is that they'll make money
out of it too. 'Corporate profits
justifies any form of lunacy.
There's been no other hoax
like it in modern times.' "
Madison's book deals
strongly with other personali-
ties, and describes the many-
faceted relationships between
'authors and their publishers,.
His volume does much to
humanize the myths .and leg-
