WASHINGTON (JTA) '-
President Ford Wednesday
characterized anti-Jew-
ish, anti-Israel remarks by
General George S. Brown
"ill advised and poorly handl-
ed" and he "feels that very
strongly," but the president
has made no move to either
dismiss or reprimand the
chairmiti - of the armed forces
Joint Chiefs of Staff or di-
rect him to apologize to them.
Brown, however, sent a
letter of apology to the
American Jewish War Vet-
erans.
The Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith called
for • President Ford to fire
Gen. Brown.
After addressing a group.
at Duke University Law
School in Durhman, N.C. Oct:
10, on the possibility of
American military interven-
tion in the event of a second
Arab oil embargo. Gen.
Brown alleged that Jews ex- .
erted too much --influence in
Congress because Jews "own,
you know, the banks in this
country, and the newspapers.
He prefaced those remarks
with a threat that "if there
is another oil embargo and
people in this country are
not only inconvenienced and
uncomfortable but s u f f e r
(they will) get tough-minded
enough to set down the Jew-
ish influence in this country
and break that lobby."
Brown's remarks, not wide-
repo•ted at the time, were
disclosed by the Washington
Post Wednesday.
According to the Post's
account, Gen. Brown, said of
the alleged Jewish influence
in the U.S., "It's so strong
yiyu wouldn't believe it. We
have the Israelis coming to
us for equipment. We say we
can't possibly get the_ Con-
gress to support a program
like that. They. say, "don't"
worry about the Congress.
We'll take care of the Con-,
gress. Now this is somebody
from another country, but
they can do it. They own,
you know, large banks in
this country, the newspapers,
you just look at where the
Jewish money is in this
country."
The Post -gory- said Gen.
Brown acknowledged in a
telephdne interview that "it
is going to be awfully easy
to conclude . . . that the
chairman - antkSemitic.
That's just not true."
The Post noted that Brown,
as Air , Force chief of staff
last year, was in charge of
the American arms airlift to
Israel during the Yom Kip-
pur war. The Post said that
Brown "explained that he
just tried to cover too much
ground in a single answer
to a question on the complex
and volatile Mideast situa-
tion."
According to the Post ver-
sion of his remarks, the Joint
Chiefs chairman also spoke
against a concentration of

wealth in the hands of the
Middle East and Persian Gulf
oil producing states. "It's not
going to be tgo many years
when all of the. money is in,
their corner of the bank, you
know $700 to $800 billion
dollars, and they're going to
he the world's banker."
