'Economy Hurts
Race Relations'
WASHINGTON — Warning
that the current economic sit-
uation could "exacerbate in-
tergroup conflicts, provide in-
flammable tinder for scape-
goating, and pit race, ethnic
and class groups against each
other," the pfesident of the
American Jewish Committee
urged the White House Sum-
mit Conference on Inflation
to "protect those groups in
our society which are now
threatened with particular
rdship."
lmer L: Winter told the
elegates attending the pre-
liminary conference, conduct-
ed by the Department of
Health, Education and Wel-
fare last week, that "concern
for the poor and the disad-
vantaged deserves priority
attention, but we dare not
ignore the problems of all
Americans whose standards
of living are beirig threaten-
\ ed, whose life savings are
being eroded, and whose con-
fidence in the future is badly
shaken. Social progress re-
quires the restoration of gen-
eral economic health and
growth. Time is of the es-
sence."

Austria Will Stay
Friendly to Israel
VIENNA (JTA) — Chan-
• cellor Bruno Kreisky said
last week that Austria was
not prepared to sacrifice
good relations with Israel for
good relations with the Arab
countries.
At a dinner, given in honor-
of visiting Premier Mahmoud
El Ayyoubi of Syria, Kreisky
said Austria wanted good re-
lations with all countries.
"But we cannot imagine any
such relations, if they would
harm relations with other
countries."
He told his Syrian guest
that thousands of Austrian-
born-people found new homes
in Israel and hundreds of
thousands of them could
save themselves from per-
secution only by escaping
there.
Moreover, Israel has creat-
ed a modern state in the
Middle East," Kreisky said.
"It would be incompatible
with our civilization, if we
would not recognize that
fact."
Ayyoubi arrived in Vienna
yesterday for a three-day of-
ficial visit. He had talks with
Kreisky on Syrian-Austrian
relations, the situation in the
'ddle East and Arab-Euro-
n relations.
