Detroit Committee Receives
2 Letters from Poltinnikovs
Detained in Russia for a Year
The Detroit Committee for
Soviet Jewry received two
messages recently from Isaac
and Victoria Poltinnikov, of
Novosibirsk, who applied for
exit visas from Russia last
year.
They are both physicians,
who have been unemployed
since they applied for the
visas, although one daughter
left Russia and emigrated to
Israel.
The Poltinnikovs have
avoided arrest as "parasites"
through their employment by
U.S. doctors as overseas con-
sultants.
The following letters were
received by 'Mrs. Donald
Sharfman of the Detroit Com-
mittee for Soviet Jewry:
Translation of Russian let-
ter:
Dear Friends,
We thank you so much for
your two letters which we did
not answer as yet. After this
we had our telephone con-
versation and as usual it
gave us great joy, especially
this time since it has been
quite some time since we
heard your voice.
Unfortunately we could not
tell you anything good, so
what tan we do? It is - not
our fault, this is our life.
I am sending you a few
paragraphs in Hebrew. This
is what we are busy with
lately. This is the result. But
don't think that was easy for
me to put together'those few
sentences. I spent quite a
bit of time on it, but we don't
lose hope. We try to be oc-
cupied - every day but the
sicknesses interrupt. I can
tell you now that Irma's
(their other daughter, who is
still with them in Russia)
pain is a little less. At any
rate, it is now bearable.
I ask you to please give
our best wishes and regards
to all our friends.
Yours, the Poltinnikovs.
Translation of Hebrew
letter:
We received your letters.
Thank you very much. We
send our blessings for the
holiday Rosh Hashana. We
are not yet allright. We don't
have freedom, but we have
patience and hope. Eretz
Israel is in our hearts, dear
friends.
And we say: This Year in
Jerusalem!
