grant from the United Jewish
Charities' resources bolstered
personal and corporate con-
tributions. This UJC gift was
a communal reaffirmation to
our brothers in Israel that
our community will continue
to do its utmost to help the
lives of her people, just as
we as individuals work to-
ward that same goal.
Our commitment to the fu-
ture of Israel's people is an
integral part of our Judaism.
The extent of our financial
aid to her is possible, in many
ways, because of our strong
local community foundation.
The results of that founda-
tion, begun with the origin of
UJC in 1899, are evident
throughout our community.
Growing daily is the struc-
ture of the new Center under
construction at Maple and
Drake Roads. That commit-
ment to provide a Jewish
atmosphere for our leisure
pursuits is a tangible declara-

tion of our certainty that our
organized community will
continue and grow in the
years ahead,
Logging thousands of miles
weekly is the fleet of United
Hebrew School busses which
carry our youngsters to and
from their Jewish education
classes. Federation is increas-
ing the UHS affiliations with
congregational schools and
continuing its support of the
day school concept. Greater
numbers of collegians are
using Federation-funded pro-
grams on Michigan campus-
es. This semester will see
new cooperation between the
Miclrasha in Southfield and
Oakland University, with the
offering of more courses to
enable commuting students
to earn a degree in Judaic
studies.
Fresh Air Society continues
to reflect in its programs the
changing of its campers. An
example is the increase in
the number of teen trips to
the East or West. Silverman
Village, dedicated this sum-
mer, provides emotionally
disturbed children in our
families with a Jewish resi-
dential camping experience.
Sinai Hospital's consistent
high-ranking status among
the top medical centers in
our country brings added
scientific laurels to our com-
munity. Sinai's commitment
to provide for the Jewish
community's health needs
and community support of
Sinai demonstrates its part-
nership in the Federation
family.
Our community is one un-
ited by its sense of Jewish
identification and one which
desires to live in peace and
dignity within the plural cul-
ture of greater Detroit. It is
to that aim that our Jewish
Community Council continues
its work of community rela-
tions and public information,
as well as its cooperation
with other community rela-
tions agencies in the causes
of personal and civil rights
and in liberty.
Our lives are essentially
free ones. Unlike those Jews
who remain in the Soviet
countries, we can make many
choices determining t h e
course of our own lives, Let
us take advantage of that
freedom of choice And let us
choose to pledge our innate
strength, nourished by our
heritage, education, and self-
respect, to a renewal of com-
munal spirit for the coming
year.

Buenos Aires Police
at Hasidic Event

BUENOS AIRES (JTA) —
A police escort, brass bands
and hasidic fervor marked
the inaguration here of the
new building of the Rabbi
Marco Gertzenstein rabbini-
cal seminary.
About 2,000 persons wit-
nessed the ceremony which
began with the moving of
Torah scrolls to the new site.
The guest of honor was a
visitor from the U.S., Dr.
Isaac Levin, president of the
Pan-American Agudat Is-
rael and donor of the new
building.
