When N. S. became editor
of "Hetzefira", then a daily,
he wrote at the same time
for various papers in various
languages, founded a Hebrew
year book, "Haasif" and be-
came author of 30 books in
Hebrew.
Florian, in his beautiful
style, portrays his father
with admiration, describing
the life of the Jews and
sketching a number of Soko-
low's friends — great poets
and writers. N. S. attended
the First Zionist Congress in
Basle (1897) and was fas-
cinated by Theodor Here
and impressed by Max Nor-
dau and Israel Zangwill. In
1902, he translated Herzl's
novel "Old-New Land" into
Hebrew under the title "Tel
Aviv"—and seven years later
the city of Te 1 Aviv was
founded.
N. S. toured European
countries a n d addressed
crowded meetings on the
situation of the Jews, ex-
plaining Zionism and inspir-
ing the audience with the
renaissance of Hebrew liter-
ature., After the death of
Herzl, his successor David
Wolffsohn invited N. S. to
become secretary-general of
the Zionist organization. He
also was editor of the offi-
