Editor, The Jewish News:
In The Jewish News of
April 26, there was an article
by Rabbi Jack Goldman con-
cerning the "bludgeoning
given to the Jewish kashrut-
observing housewife during
the Passover festival."
As the rabbi of a public
institution (Sinai Hospital)
who works in the area of
kashrut and who is NOT a
member of any rabbinical
organization, I feel it neces-
sary to challenge some of
the statements made.
Rabbi Goldman's basic
charge is that some rabbis
are getting rich at the ex-
pense of the community by
causing an increase in the
cost of kosher food. He then
goes on to give examples.
6
These statements are sim-
ply not true. The eggs that
may be used on Passover
may be purchased anywhere
and are not subject to any
rabbinical supervision. The
same is true of fresh fish.
Kosher meat does not cost
any more during Passover
than it does during the year.
It is true that kosher meat
is more expensive than non-
kosher meat, but one has to
consider the extra costs in-
curred in the processing of
kosher meat: Ritual slaugh-
terers in Detroit make con-
siderably less than their
counterparts elsewhere. (I
am an ordained ritual
slaughter and I have worked
in Detroit as well as other
cities).

U-M Tests Device
to Help Victims
of Heart Attacks

"The body boot," an ex-
1 perimental external heart as-
sist device, has had its first
University of Michigan Hos-
pital trial to help patients
recover from heart attacks.
Dr. Irvin J. Schatz, asso-
ciate director of the hospital's
cardiology section, said the
device was used for the first
time on a 37-year-old Ford
Motor Co. engineer who suf-
fered an acute heart attack.
The man has an excellent
prognosis for a rapid recov-
ery.
He said the device, the
only one of its kind in the
Midwest region, increases
the blood supply to the heart
by rhythmically squeezing
blood vessels in the patient's
legs between heart beats.
It may have the potential
to limit or reduce heart
muscle damage during the
early days following a heart
attack, he said.
The circulation booster de-
vice is put into action within
12 hours following a heart
attack. Timed by the patient's
own heart signals, it creates
a pulsing backpressure from
the legs to the aorta (main
artery coming from the
heart) between beats. The
coronary arteries branch off
the aorta and receive an ex-
tra surge of blood each time
the heart rests.

Love comes at every age

ARNOLD LAKIND — PHOTOGRAPHER

Constant complaints never
get pity.—Proverb.

Kosher butchers are not
like large chain stores that
have a very low overhead.
They must also do more to
the meat than non-kosher
butchers. They must evis-
cerate the veins and are
often called upon to salt and
soak, thereby "koshering"
the meat. These butchers
must also make enough
money to support themselves
in order to continue their
service to the community.
If one takes all of this into
account, the price of kosher
meat appears relatively inex-
pensive. Comparing the rela-
tive price of meat in Detroit
to other cities this is 'indeed
the case.
The kashrut advisory sub-
comMittee of the internal re-
lations committee of the
Jewish Community Council
reported that instead of
making money on the super-
vision of kosher meat, the
supervising council of rabbis
operates at a deficit of $5,000
annually on just this super-
vision. For one to make the
statement that they make
money on this supervision is
indeed a travesty of the
truth.
Rabbi Goldman also men-
tions the skyrocketing price
of coffee. Since one can pur-
chase many of the same
brands of coffee that they
use all year at any store
they choose, this statement
again is contrary to fact.
There are many Passover
food items that do indeed
cost substantially more on
Passover. One must under-
stand, however, that these
items do indeed require very
strict supervision and that
people must be paid to un-
dertake this supervision. One
must also consider the price
mark-up of the retail outlets
that sell these items.
This is an item that per-
haps calls for consumer pro-
tection, but certainly not a
flagrant attempt at distorting
the facts.
Rabbi Goldman also men-
tions the Passover "blue
milk." I have no doubt that
even he is aware of the dif-
ference between this milk
and regular non-Passover
milk. To say that the only
difference is age and cost is
naive at best.
