Over the year s, King
has been active in profes-
sional, educational, and pub-
lic affairs on national, state
and local levels. In connec-
tion with educational activi-
ties, in 1968 he initiated and
was instrumental in raising
a fund for a lectureship at
the University of Michigan
in honor of Raoul Wallen-
berg, a Swedish classmate
of his at the U-M in the
early 1930s. Wallenberg was
responsible for the rescue of
up to 100,000 Jews during
World War II — a rescue for
which he sacrificed even life
itself in service to a people
with whom he had little in
common except existence on
this planet.
In addition to his profes-
sional affiliations, King's
memberships include the
Founders Society of the De-
troit Institute of Arts, Ameri-
can Technion Society (De-
troit Chapter), Standard City
Club, Presidents' Club at the
University of Michigan, Uni-
versity Club of Ann Arbor,
Franklin Hills Country Club
and Recess Club.
The Kahn organization's
identification with the design
of facilities for the Jewish
community in Detroit dates
back to the turn of the cen-
tury when Albert Kahn,
founder of the firm, designed
the old Hannah Schloss
Building on High Street. The
original Temple Beth El on
Woodward and Eliot, which
later became the Bonstelle
Playhouse and which is now
used. as a theater by Wayne
State University, is also of
Kahn design, as is the
Temple Beth El structure on
Woodward and Gladstone.
Other Kahn-designed facili-
ties include - the present
Southfield Shaarey Zedek, as
well as its earlier home on
Chicago Boulevard at Law-
ton; the Jewish Community
Center branch on Davison
and the Home for the Aged
on W. Seven Mile Road.
Aniong best known of Kahn-
designed facilities is the
Sinai Hospital complex. Its
forerunner, also of Kahn
design, was the old North
End Clinic on Holbrook Ave-
nue.
King has been identified
with the Jewish community
of Detroit since his arrival
in this country as a young-
ster in 1923. His father, the
late Rev. Lester King, served
for 40 years as a shohet. A
1925 graduate of the United
Hebrew Schools, King attend-
ed Yeshivath Beth Yehudah
when it was first founded.
He served for many years
as an officer and member of
the board of the Jewish Cen-
ter. He has been a Shaarey
Zedek board member for the
past eight years.
Both of Mr. and Mrs.
King's children received
their religious education at
Shaarey Zeclek. Phyllis D.,
(deceased), was married to
Dr. Samuel P. Weiner in
1958. Susan M., the younger
of the girls, was married to
Dr. Gary M. Roggin in De-
cember of 1962 in the first
wedding solemnized in the
Shaarey Zedek Synagogue in
Southfield.
