Hayim Donin 19 years ago.
He and his wife Esther are
"master builders" of Yesh-
iva University.
Presented traditionally at
the annual dinners of the
Detroit Friends, the Yeshiva
University Distinguished
Service Award is the highest
honor for community leader-
ship bestowed by Yeshiva U.
Dr. Samuel Belkin, presi-
dent of Yeshiva University,
in a letter to Allan recalled
that he is the grandson of
the late Rabbi Rachmiel
Cohen, whose "name shines
so brightly in the annals of
Yeshiva University" as a
pioneer in the early 1900s
devoted to the support of the
Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theo-
logical Seminary, the insti-
tution from which the present
university complex has de-
scended.
"This relationship is more
than a mere point of bio-
graphical interest," said Dr.
Belkin. "It bespeaks a con-
tinuity of Jewish tradition
precisely at a time when the

the Masons. He is a vice
president of the local Jewish

will inaugurate a Sun d a y
forum series "Today's News
— Three Issues," which will
consider the oil crisis, the
Solzhenitsyn affair and the
attempts being made to re-
institute the death penalty
in Michigan.
Max Biber, manager of fuel
oil for Marathon Oil Co. will
discuss the causes behind the
shortage of oil in the United
States 11 a.m. Sunday. Biber
is the synagogue's first vice
president.
Dr. Zvi Gitelman, associate
professor of political science
at the University of Michigan
and author of "Jewish Na-
tionalities and Soviet Pol-
itics," will consider the im-
plications of the deportation
of Alexander Solzhenitsyn 11
a.m. April 28.
On May 12, attorney Eu-
gene Wanger, representative
of the Michigan Committee
Against Capital Punishment,
will speak on "Should Capital
Punishment Be Reinstated?"
11 a.m. at the synagogue. Ile
is the author of a section of
the 1963 Michigan Constitu-
tion which stipulates that "No
law shall be enacted provid-
ing for the penalty of death."
This series coincides with
the second session of Hebrew
school so that (parents who
otherwise would drop their
children off and return home
may stay for the series. Con-
tinental breakfast will be
served.
