A page from Abraham Regelson's modern translation
of the Hagada (1941), illustrated by Siegmund Forst.

Abraham Regelson,- distin-
guished Hebrew poet and
novelist, who recently 'won
the Bialik Prize for Hebrew
Literature, has added another
volume to his voluminous col-
lection of short stories.
"Beit Hanitzotz" — "House
of the Spark" — is replete
with legends that fascinate
the young Hebrew readers
and serve splendidly in en-
riching the Hebrew knowl-
edge of students of the lan-
guage who have already ac-
quired an introductory ac-
quaintance with Hebrew.
Issued by the Regelson
Book Committee, 18 Rehov
'Hapninim, N'veh Ephraim,
Israel, this volume has re-

ceived wide acclaim and Re-
gelson's admirers in this
country have encouraged its
wide distribution.
Detroiter Walter Field, one
of Regelson's admirers here,
has joined the committee and
is assisting in popularizing
"Beit Hanitzotz" as one of the
very important collections of
Hebrew short stories.
Sparked with legends, hu-
mor, adventure, the 25 stories
in this attractive book touch
upon many aspects of Jewish
life and Israeli experiences.
Whether it is Purim or an
adventure in a Jewish settle-
ment, the stories are filled
with action and are enchant-
ing young readers.

`Lamentations' Brought Up to Date

The destruction of the First
and Second Temples of Jeru-
'Salem, the Spanish Inquisi-
tion, the anti-Jewish pogroms
of Czarist Russia arid the
Nazi Holocaust are evoca-
tively linked in a new edition
of the biblical "Book of
Lamentations," illustrated by
Mark Podwal and published
"by the National Council on
Art in Jewish Life.
Podwal's drawings for the
new "Lamentations" — pub-
lished in a limited edition of
2,000 to sell at $10 each and
a deluxe edition of 100 at $60
each — sometimes directly
illustrate the text and some-
times parallel it, using later
tragedies in Jewish history
to illuminate the biblical
poetry.
Goose-stepping Nazi sol-
diers are seen carrying off
a Sabbath candelabra, for
example, opposite a portion
of the text that reads:

The adversary has spread out
his hand upon all her treasures,
For she has seen that the heathen
have entered into her sanctuary,
Concerning whom Thou did com-
mand that they should not enter
into Thy congregation.

Illustrating other passages,
the Grand Inquisitor laughs
mockingly at the distress of
the Jews, as does Czar
Nicholas II; Babylonian
winged lions wear gas masks
and swastikas; an 18th Cen-

tury spice box becomes the
tower of massacre in the city
of York during the crusade
of Richard the Lion-Hearted.

Diamonds Reported
Missing in 2 Flights

TEL AVIV — Diamonds
valued at $575,000 dis-
appeared on El Al flights
between Israel and New
-York, and an airline employe
is out on bail pending inves-
tigation.
The IL 2,500,000 consian-
ments of diamonds w
aboard two El Al flights.
was unknown to police
whether the disappearance
took place in Israel or New
York.
The first shipment was re-
ported missing about a month
ago, when several bags of
mail containing diamonds
valued at $230,000 vanished
from a consignment of 58
bags. Two weeks later, bags
with $330,000 in diamonds
were reported to, have dis-
appeared.

A porter at Ben Gurion Air-
port was convicted recently
for complicity in the theft of
in diamonds sent
$500,000
from London.
