■ ••• ■ 11•111,
NEW YORK — With soar-
ing food prices and other fi-
nancial pressures causing
the nation's airlines to reduce
in-flight meals, some airlines
are finding an increase in
the demand for kosher meals
among non-Jewish passen-
gers.
The meals are prepared by
kosher 1caterers, and the
menu is more substantial
than in standard economy-
class meals. Most airlines
have for years allowed pas-
sengers a choice of a kosher
meal if they request one 24
hours in advance.
However, with the cutbacks
and requests by some air-
lines to end free meals al-
together, non-Jewish passen-
gers have begun ordering
kosher meals.
"I think you could say a
lot of people have discovered
that you don't have to be
Jewish to eat kosher food,"
one airline executive said. A
United Airlines official said
that for his airline "If it's
a flight where we'd normally
offer only a sandwich, we've
switched to kosher sand-
wiches."
Mordechai Ben-Air, presi-
dent of Israel's El Al Air
Line, predicted that in the
future, international mass
tourist travel will see no-frill
service, and if passengers
want to eat, they will have
to bring a box lunch.
