Horwitz Retires From JOG Staff

Joint Distribution Committee,

sultant to JDC in areas

meeting of the JDC in New
York, Dec. 6. The 500 Jewish
community leaders accorded
Mr. Horwitz a standing ova-
tion in recognition of his long
years of service to Jewish
organizations in the United
States and abroad.
Horwitz, who became di-
rector-general of the JDC in
1967, served in a number of
welfare and refugee assist.

staff in 1946 in in Italy where
he directed a relief' program
during the heavy flow of
Jewish displaced persons and
former concentration camp

pointed country director for
JDC in Tunisia where he or-
ganized and supervised a
wide range of health, wel-
fare and educational pro-
grams for a Jewish commu-
nity of about 100,000. In 1953
he was assigned to the Paris
office as director of the de-
partment of emigration.

He was appointed director
of the European and North
African affairs office of
United Hias Service and re-
joined the JDC staff in 1957
as director for JDC/Malben
in Israel.

In 1963 Horwitz joined the
staff of the Council of Jewish
Federations and Welfare

partment of overseas studies
and services. Two years later
he returned to Israel as Is-
rael representative of the

(UNRRA) as a social worker
at the end of World War 1I
