The picture of a slowly
tightening noose around the
necks of Soviet Jews was
drawn by a young American
activist addressing a Soviet
Jewry Seminar - Workshop
Sunday morning at the Jewish
Center.

Glenn Richter, national di-
rector of the Student Strug-
gle for Soviet Jewry, recount-
ing the events leading up to
the trial and imprisonment
of activist Alexandr Feldman,
said the trumped-up case was
"so outrageous, anyone could
be next." Said one of Feld-
man's friends, "All of us are
hostages. They can annihilate
us any day."
The Soviet strategy, Rich-
ter explained, is to pick on
a few Jews—to arrest, inter-
rogate, physically abuse and,
the ultimate weapon, bring
them to trial for nonexistent
crimes—so as -to intimidate
others seeking to emigrate to
Israel. Even those who are
permitted to leave — over
30,000 this year—face the So-
viets' perverse policy of
breaking up families.

Soviet Jews have proven
their courage, said Richter.
"I don't know if we have
their guts. We have to give
them courage so they can re-
sist; they want to know we're
behind them."

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
38—Friday, Dec. 21, 1973

Suggestions for action were
made during the course of the
seminar-workshop, sponsored
by the Jewish Community
Council with the cooperation
of the Detroit Action Com-
mittee for Soviet Jewry.
These included person-to-
person contacts such as let-
ters, packages and phone
calls to the families of pris-
oners of conscience and oth-
ers seeking to leave the
USSR. Where possible, letters
in Hebrew are appreciated.
A new project being initi-
ated by the Detroit Action
Committee, in concert with
other cities, is the shipment
of nonreligious H e b r e w
books to Soviet Jews in the
many ulpanim (study groups)
throughout the Soviet Union.
Arnold Michlin, co-chair-
man of the Action Committee
who presided at the seminar,
said that experience has
shown such Hebrew books do
get through to Jews in the
USSR. The latter have made
great efforts to teach the He-
brew language and history of
the Jewish people, but be-
cause they are isolated from
the sources of Jewish educa-
tion in the world, they are
unable to acquire proper
learning materials.
They have requested dic-
tionaries, grammars, history
books, modern Hebrew fic-
tion and other literature.
Mailing of religious material
is not advised.
Contributions ($5 covers the
cost of a book, postage, reg-
istration and insurance) can
be sent to the Detroit Action
Committee for Soviet Jewry,
in care of Michlin, 31460
Stonewood Ct., Farmington
48024.
Yet another project, "Adopt
a-Family," has been taken up
by local congregations and
organizations who send letters
and packages to a selected
Soviet Jewish family. In this
area, there have been several
"success stories," Michlin re-
ported.

A total of 30 British stage personalities, led by Lord Olivier, demonstrated in
fruit of Soviet Embassy in London in protest of the Russians' refusal to let famed
ballet dancer Valery Panov and his wife, Galina emigrate to Israel. The dancers had
staged a hunger strike to support their requests. The Russians announced the pair
would be allowed to leave two months later. However, when a visa finally was granted
to Panov this week it allowed only for him to leave the USSR. Not wanting to leave
without his wife, Panov rejected the visa.
