Gurion, proclaiming Israel's independence on May 14, 1948, to the world and to the
members of the new state's Provisional Government which he headed. As he broad-
cast the solemn declaration in Tel Aviv, Arab bombing could be heard in the background.

friends in their youth and comrades in the fight for Jewish freedom
in Palestine. They were exiled together by the Turks who then ruled
the Holy Land, and came to America. Here they helped found the

as privates.
