became Israel's prime minister and her president, were staunch
friends in their youth and comrades in the fight for Jewish freedom
in Palestine. They were exiled together by the Turks who then ruled
the Holy Land, and came to America. Here they helped found the
• Jewish Legion of the British Armed Forces, in which they served
as privates.
