rainfall, then there would be
little point in drilling for new
wells. However, if the water
penetrated the sand cover
and filtered deep enough to
refill groundwater pools,
then the search for water
would obviously be fruitful.
To see if the groundwater
was refilled and to find the
age of the underlying water,
tritium and Carbon-14 tests
were applied. The scientists
speculated that the collected
underground pools may have
been caused by water flow-
ing from other parts of the
desert.
The result of the testing
proved that the water lying
beneath the Kalahari Desert
was isotopically as light as
rain and that it penetrated

REHOVOT—Weizmann In-
stitute Prof. Emanuel Mazor,
an Israeli geologist working
in conjunction with the Re-
public of Botswana Geologi-
cal Survey, the institute's
department of isotope re-
search and the Israel Atomic
Energy Commission, helped
find water in Africa's Kala-
hari Desert.
The desert is inhabited by
about 500,000 people who de-
rive their livelihood from
cattle raising. However, with
the development of the coun-
try, the need for water in
creases.
To help the desert people,
a number of scientists in
1972 undertook a ground-

water research project in the
Kalahari. With the oBtswana
Survey, which has regularly
carried out water-table meas-
urements and chemical
analyses of existing and new-
ly drilled wells, the group
set out to collect samples for
more sophisticated isotopic
and chemical testing, apply-
ing tritium and Carbon-14
tests.
Scientists said the Kala-
hari, 100 times the size of
the Negev, has about 450 mm
of rainfall per year. Geolo-
gists note that this rainfall
is lost through evapotrans-
piration, a process in which
rain water accumulates in
the top meter (about one
yard) of the sand and then
evaporates leaving no
groundwater.

Appeal for Tefilin for Israel Army Use

An appeal for Torah scrolls
and sets of tefilin, mainly for
use of the Israel army, has
drawn much interest here, in
connection with a visit to this
country by Rabbi Eliahu

Israeli Detroiter
Reports From Front

Boaz Eflal, husband of the
director of Haverim House,
returned to Israel, where he
was stationed in the Golan
Heights in the Yom Kippur
War.
In a letter, he described
the mood of the country:
"You know well that this
country does live civilian life
with spirit and joy. But you
also know that there is a
toll . . . One gets up on the
morning in Detroit and knows
that the air will be polluted.
The prospect of breathing
polluted air may frighten the
inhabitants of the Upper
Galilee, but not the tough
Detroiter. When the pro-
spects of war, or the condi-
tions of almost-war no longer
frighten p e o p 1 e, this is
frightening."

Sacrifice
An enemy is invited, an
evil one, one upon whom both
guilt and punishment can be
rolled, who is both instigator
and sacrifice, who both ex-
plains the moral torment in
which men find themselves
and expiates it for them. —
Ludwig Lewisohn.
