Carl Levin New President
of Detroit's City Council

The election of Carl Levin
at the top of the field running
for Detroit Common Council
means that he will be the
new president of the council,
succeeding Mel Ravitz, out-
going councilman.
As president, Levin will be
second in Detroit govern-
mental ranks only to the new
mayor, State Sen. Coleman
A. Young, who was elected
by some 14,000 votes over
John Nichols, former police
commissioner.
Levin, who was one of 18
candidates in the council
race, said upon election that
his first task will be to move
with the council to unite the
city of Detroit. He was re-
ferring to the mayoral bal-
loting, which was seen to
be along racial lines. A
liberal who is only in his first

term on the council. Levin
campaigned on his record of
improving neighborhoods.

In other mayoral races,
David Shepherd was elected
in Oak Park and Isadore
Mulias in Trenton. Leonard
Teicher lost to Donald Era-
cassi in Southfield.

Elected to the Oak Park
city council was Charlotte
Rothstein and Sidney Shayne.
Nelson Chase and Stephen
Cooper are new councilmen
in Southfield.
Marvin Frankel and Ben-
jamin Friedman, unapposed
for municipal judge and asso-
ciate judge, respectively, in
Oak Park, were re-elected.
Sidney Alexander was
elected commissioner in
Huntington Woods.
Bertha Kaminsky was
elected to the Detroit school
board in Region 4.

NEW YORK (JTA)—Abra-
ham D. Beame took more
than 60 per cent of the vote
Tuesday to become New
York City's 104th mayor and
the first Jew to hold that
post.
As expected, the 67-year-
old city controller -receiVed
his largest pluralities in the
Jewish middle-class districts
of Brooklyn, the Bronx and
Queens, but he also gathered
nearly 70 per cent of the vote
in the city's Black and His-
panic neighborhoods such as
Harlem and East Harlem,
Bedford- Stuyvesant and
Ocean Hill.
Beame lost only three dis-
tricts in Manhattan and these
went to the other Jewish
candidate in the four-way
race, Assemblyman Albert H.
Blumenthal. Blumenthal won
in the predominantly liberal
west side and east side and
Greenwich Village where
there are large numbers of
Jewish voters.
