Christians and the Yom Kippur War

The state of Israel exists
today for four primary rea-
sons—it is in the will of
Divine Providence that a
remnant of ancient Israel
should return to occupy a
portion of the land promised
them; it exists because of
the sheer determination of
the Israeli to live and sur-
vive; it exists through the
support of the Jewish Dia-
spora; it exists because the
state of Israel receives moral
economic and military sup-
port from the Anglo-Saxon
Protestant nations of the
world.
New Left intellectuals and
subliminally anti-Semitic con-
servative opinion makers
have sought to weaken sup-
port for Israel among Is-
rael's largest non - Jewish
allies—the English-speaking,
largely Protestant, world
community. Several falla-
cious canards have been em-
ployed.
For instance, Israel is
presented as an "aggressor"
with 2,000,000 Jews sup-
posedly "persecuting" 200,-
000,000 Arabs. The Jews are
depicted as rich Zionists
while the Arabs are seen as
poor "third world" colonial
captives.
This is pure nonsense. The
overwhelming majority of
Israelis have no interest in
adding more acres of Sinai
desert to their homeland,
nor administering a colonial
suzerainty over neighboring
Arab states. Israel would
gladly welcome the d a y
when they could dismantle
their civilian-military estab-
lishment and channel the
precious resources of men
and materiel into the peace-
ful development of their
country.
To depict Israel as a rich
aggresive nation is a grotes-
que distortion. The Arab
nations have formented
hatred and war for a genera-
tion. They have been backed
by oil-rich deposits whose
enormous wealth and econo-
mic power dwarfs that of
world Jewry. In addition,
the second most powerful na-
tion on earth, the USSR, has
armed the Arab states with
a limitless supply of sophi-
sticated weaponry second to
none.
The Arab nations can halt
their "holy war" overnight
by diplomatic recognition of
the state of Israel and
through a rational negotia-
tion of demilitarized bound-
aries and repatriation of ref-
ugees in a Palestinian Arab
state in the occupied west
bank of Jordan.

is a vision of the peace of a
Jewish graveyard. The peace
that comes from genocidal
extermination is not accept-
able to the Ango-Saxon
Protestant world or to hu-
mankind.
The Middle East has been
a theater of religious and
ethnic fanaticism that makes
Ulster look like a Punch and
Judy show. The Islamic
states systematically perse-
cuted Levantine Christians
for centuries. The screams
for the blood of infidels from
the minarets of Turkey still
sound in the ears of millions
of millions of Armenians who
were driven from their home-
land less than 50 years ago.
The Turks, cheered on by
their Arab co-religionists,
mercilessly conducted the
first Hitleristic campaign of
20th Century genocide as
3,000,000 defenseless Ar-
menians were marched to the
deserts to be slaughtered and
starved for the crime of con-
fessing the Christian faith.
Once Israel had been driv-
en into the sea, one could
be sure that a Grand Mufti
somewhere would begin a
"Holy Jihad" calling for the
destruction of the Christian
minorities.
Critics of Israel have cited
the problem of the Pales-
tinian refugees as one that
stems from the innate "in-
humanity and perfidy" of
Jews. The total refugee prob
lem in the Middle East is
one that must be equitably
resolved. Israel will assume
responsibility for making
reparations and providing for
resettlement of Arbas, when
the Arab nations halt their
aggression.
However, there is a tend-
ency to overlook the fact that
a half-million Jews in Mor-
occo, Egypt, Yemen, and
Iraq were driven from their
homes by fanatic pogroms
without compensation for
their losses of homes and
property. There has never
been a voice raised to seek
reparations from the Arab
governments for these losses.
If the oil-rich sheiks had
spent as much money in re-
settling and caring for the
Palestinians as they have
spent in war-making, the
West Bank would be a verit-
able Eden. If the Arabs had
been as generous in caring
for their displaced brethren
as world Jewry has been
concerned for the refugees
from Hitler and the Levan-

to Kibutz Helpers
NEW YORK—Scholarships
for air fare are now avail-
able for young people volun-
teering to work on kibutzim
in Israel, it was announced
by Chaim Ganel, executive
director of the American
Zionist Youth Foundation
(AZYF).
AZYF, since the outbreak
of war in Israel, has been
sponsoring a special Sherut
La'am volunteer program for
young people from the U.S.
and Canada, age 18-30. The
volunteers perform non-mili-
tary work on kibutzim.
Applicants must have a
valid passport, a medical
examination and sign a com-
mitment to work on the
kibutz for at least six
months. Airfare must be
paid by the volunteer, and
limited scholarships a r e
available.

Had there been a peace
settlement 20 years ago,
there would probably be only
a handful of refugees on the
Gaza Strip today. The war
is the enemy—and the war-
making mentality must be
exorcised.
The Christian West cannot
abandon Israel to the mercy
of her Arab neighbors. Israel
must be supported while the
search for a just and endur-
ing peace goes forward.
There cannot be a "Chris-
tian Anti-Israel" position nor
a "Christian pro-Arab" posi-
tion. There can be only a
commitment to establish the
optimum climate for peace
to flourish in a land where
God desires all His children
to live as brethren in unity.
