Six Ambulances Donated to Magen David Adom; Help of 'Children, BI
Capturing the spirit of em- many scores of Detroiters the Israel counterpart of the sums needed for the Israel
Emergency Fund, and as in-
pathy with the sufferers conducted efforts here in be- Red Cross.
Compared with the vast vestments in Israel Bonds,
from the Middle East war, half of Magen David Adorn,
Magen David is a small fac-
tor, but it played a great role
as supplementary support to
give courage to the people
of Israel and the fighters for
survival.
It was an immense result.

Six ambulances were do
nated (in sums of $8,000 and
E
more each) by Dr. and Mrs.
Harold A. Maxmen, Mrs.
William (Bella) Hordes,
co
Shaarit Haplaytah, Mr. and
Mrs. Felix Rosenzweig and
David S. and Irving T. Holtz-
man (Holtzman Foundation).
Efforts for Magen David
were inspired two days after
the outbreak of the Yom
Kippur outrage at a meeting
at the home of Dr. and Mrs.
Sheldon Mintz. Mrs. Mintz is
chairman of the Magen
David women's division. Im-
mediately, responses came
from many quarters — all
gifts being additional to the
major funds for the United
Jewish Appeal.
Children solicited with can-
isters, offers of blood dona-
tions came from many quar-
ters, and lists of names of
those offering blood are be-
ing compiled. If needed,
these offers will be utilized.

Donin Praises
Israeli Spirit
Rabbi Hayim Donin, spiri-
tual leader of Cong. Bnai
David who with his family
made aliya earlier this
month, wrote The Jewish
News of his impressions
those first days —which co-
incided with the Yom Kippur
war.
The Donins were aboard a
Boeing 747 the Monday fol-
lowing the outbreak of the
war.
The two most noticeable
wartime conditions. he said,
were the total blackout after
dark and the almost total
absence of adult males from
the streets and offices.
"And yet all essential
services are being maintain-
ed by an overabundance of
volunteers from among high
school youth, new immi-
grants, older men, women,
even tourists."
He wrote that there was
some panic shopping, but
supplies and food appeared
ample.
"The spirit of the nopula-
tion has been magnificent,"
he wrote. "Home-front mo-
rale is exceedingly high —
although release of the first
casualty figures cast a som-
ber pall of gloom over
everyone. Almost everyone
has somebody in the family
on the front lines.
"One has to be here and
mingle with the neighbors
and others to appreciate the
sober determination and
quiet courage possessed by
our brethren here in Israel.
I am proud to have become
one of them and to be able
to be with them in their hour
of crisis."
