Rabbi and Mrs. Jacob Hoberman

Eleven years after his
death, BBC presented a
series of programs on Albert
Einstein. An attempt was
made to answer the ques-
tion, Who was Albert Ein-
stein? And what exactly did
he do?
From reminiscence to
reminiscence, with commen-
tary by Dr. G. J. Whitrow
and others, Einstein, who
once modestly described him-
self by saying "God gave
me the stubbornness of a
mule and a fairly keen
scent," becomes increasingly
clear. The broadcast series

was edited for book publica-
tion, and "Einstein: The Man
and His Achievement" has
been issued as a paperback
by Dover Publications.
Originating in Israel, the
three broadcasting programs
that make up this paperback
provide the basic facts on
Einstein's life.
Prof. H. A. Einstein, Ein-
stein's elder son, provided
interesting data on the great
scientist's private life and
work. His wife was an out-
standing scientist; her son
said she gave up her ambi-
tions to devote herself to her
husband.
An interesting foreword by
Christopher Sykes adds
merit as an introduction to
this book. The participants
in the programs included
many noted scientists.

est extent. Recent studies

have examined the different
types of bird songs, the role
of songs in bird behavior,
and the changes in behavior
which change the songs
themselves. These studies
have enabled us to answer
such questions as: Which
birds need to learn their
songs, and in which species
are the songs inherited? Is
there a critical period when
songs must be learned? Why
and when do birds display
vocal mimicry? How many
different songs does each
bird sing? And how do orni-
thologists classily bird _songs?
In "A Study of Bird Song,"
a Dover paperback, Edward
A. Armstrong, one of the
ablest writers in the field,
views the bird song as one
aspect of a delicately inte-
grated complex of behavior.
He examines bird utterances
as language, and the various
types of songs.

Rabbi Jose chanced to
overhear his wife blaming
a maid-servant for something
she did not do.
"How can you blame her
if you are not certain of her
guilt? he asked his wife.
"But you should not have
reproved me in her pres-
ence," said she.
"Nay," answered the
rabbi. "She ought to know
that her rights are not
despised."—Bereshit Rabba.
