A Happy, Healthy
New Year To All

Jewish tradition requires
that a person set aside a
place in the synagogue or at
home where he will regu-
larly pray.
The Talmud (Berakot 6b)
traces this practice to Abra-
ham who set aside a special
place where he offered his
prayers. A number of rea-
sons are offered to explain
this requirement. First, it is
maintained that a regular
location will promote better

There are also some who
claim that this is done be-
cause prayer represents the
ritual sacrifice of the lambs
which were sacrificed daily
in the temple of old. Just as
these sacrifices could only
be made on a permanently
assigned altar so do the
prayers which represent
them require an established
place for prayer. A third
opinion is that setting aside
a place for prayer estab-
lishes that place as a holy
place. It therefore becomes
the place where finite man

the Holy One, God Almighty.

the most dis-
tracting vision to a person's
concentration is the vision
of his own self. Even
if • he holds his eyes
closed during prayer, the
rabbis were afraid that he
might open them accidental-
ly and gaze upon himself or
at anyone else around him
in the mirror. There is yet
another aspect to this pro-
hibition. As a rule, Jewish
tradition forbids praying in
front of any images, since
it might appear that the
prayers were directed to the
finite image instead of to the
infinite God. Since the mirror
presents an image it is logi-
cally prohibited to pray in
front of a mirror.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — U.S.
Ambassador Kenneth Keating
said here that the U.S. places
high value on the Israeli
market which has imported
from America as much as
Israel's four Arab neighbors
combined and as much as a
large nation like India.
Lately, however, Israel's
purchases from the U.S. have
been dwindling, Keating said
at a luncheon of the Israel-
American Chamber of Com-
merce.
"Israel should not think of
America only as a supplier
of Phantoms, Skyhawks and
tanks" but also as a source
of commodities and material,
he said.
His remarks were related
to the forthcoming "Technol-
ogy-73" exhibit on the Tel
Aviv Fair Grounds where the
U.S. will display new indus-
trial machinery for the bene-
fit of Israeli customers.
