Midrash About Slander
Rabbi Abbahu and Rabbi
Simeon ben Lakish visited
Caesarea. Rabbi Abbahu
said: "Why enter so evil a
city; its inhabitants are guilty
of blaspheming God?"
Rabbi Simeon descended
from his donkey and, pick-

ing up some gravel, threw
it into the mouth of Rabbi
Abbahu.
"Why have you done this?"
exclaimed the latter.
"To -teach you," said Rabbi
Simeon, "that God dislikes
men who slander." — Shir

Kol Ami Youth
Build New Ark
Temple Kol Ami congre-
gants found a decorative ad-
dition to their services on
these High Holy Days.
Seven members of the
temple youth group, Kol Arni.
Temple Youth, gathered dur-
ing the summer to construct
an ark for the sanctuary.
replacing the old ark that
was in disrepair. The new
one will be placed -perma-
nently in the new temple
slated for construction in
West Bloomfield.
Inspired by congregation
member Edward Rothschild,
the teens had the help of Rob-
ert Roth, a temple member
and factory representative
f o r Burlington Industries
Furniture Division, who ac-
quired pieces of white oak as
a gift from his company.
The seven young people
sanded, stained and fitted
the cabinet, which stands 56
inches high and is 32 inches
wide. Purple velvet lines the
inside, and 10 hand-cut He-
brew letters representing the
10 Commandments highlight
the outside. A fluorescent
tube illuminates the interior.
Among the youth members
working on the ark were
Steven Rothschild, Elise
Kohn, Leslie Weiss, Lisa
Oppenheim, Jim Kabcenell,
Richard Varon and Debbie
Roth.
