Ex-LOA Chief
to Address
Donin Dinner

Religion for SYNAGOGUE
Survialism

The Jewish religion is the
crowning achievement of our
people and our supreme gift
to civilization. It possesses
such vast reservoirs of spir-
itual truth that it has been
able to sustain and inspire
generations upon generations
of our people and to retain
their sacrificial loyalty under
all circumstances and upon
all levels of culture. It thus
became the strongest factor
in the survival of our people,
the kesher shel kayama, the
enduring tie. It is doubtful
whether the Jewish people
can long survive in the Dias-
pora without it.—Abba Hillel
Silver, in "The World Crisis
and Jewish Survival."

Jacques Torczyner, former
president of the Zionist Or-
ganization of America, will
address an Israel Bond din-
ner honoring Rabbi Hayim
Donin as Bnai David "man
of the year" 6:30 p.m. Sept.
19 at the synagogue. Torczy-
ner is a member of the pre-
sidium of the World Zionist
Actions Committee. Dinner
chairman is Irving Belinsky,
and Jack Kraizman, co-
chairman, with Morris J.
Brandwine acting as sponsor
chairman and Jerome Soble
as parlor meeting chairman.
For reservations, call Irael
Bonds, 557-6770, or the syna-
gogue, 557-8210.

Those Who Transgress
the Commandments
He who transgresses a
light commandment will end
by violating a weighty one.
If he neglect, "Thou shalt
love thy neighbor as thyself"
(Lev. 19:18), he will soon
transgress the c o m man d,
"Thou shalt not hate thy
brother in thy heart" (Lev.
19:17), and "Thou shalt not
avenge nor bear a grudge
against the children of thy
people" (Lev. 19:18). Hav-
ing transgressed these, he
will go on to violate the com-
mand, "And thy brother shall
live with thee" (Lev. 25:36);
for he will have been im-
pelled to shed blood.—Sifre
Deuteronomy.

I would rather sit on a
pumpkin and have it all to
myself than be crowded on a
velvet cushion.—Henry David
Thoreau.
