PARIS (JTA) — Two un-
identified men attempted to
set up a small machinegun
in an attic window facing the
rear of the Israeli Embassy
here Monday night while an
Independence Day reception
attended by 3,000 guests, in-
cluding high French govern-
ment officials, was in prog-
ress.
Police said the weapon
commanded a narrow street
along which the guests had
to walk" and that even a brief
burst of gunfire under the
circumstances could have
been deadly.
According to the police,
two men broke into the sev-
enth floor attic room occu-
pied by a housemaid, tied
her up and began assembling
the machinegun on the win-
dowsill.
The maid screamed when
she saw the weapon, and the
two men fled. Neighbors who
heard the screams summoned
police.
The incident, which was not
immediately disclose d,
brought a small army of spe-
cial security men and police
sharpshooters to the scene to
guard the embassy and comb
the area for suspects. Plain-
clothes detectives discreetly
entered the embassy build-
ing with the permission of
Israeli authorities and min-
gled with the guests as Is-
raeli security men kept a
sharp watch on the stream
of people waiting to enter.
Police sharpshooters took
up positions on nearby roof-
tops. But none of the guests
attending the reception was
aware that anything was
amiss.
After the reception, Israeli
Ambassador Asher Ben Na-
tan was escorted to his home
under heavy police guard.
Patrol cars and armed police
continued to stand guard
Wednesday over his residence
on the elegant Avenue Foch.
Police sources said Wednes-
day that an investigation was
in progress but refused to
say whether any progress
had been made.

wounded during the shootout

After a wild chase through
the city's streets, the two

were arrested.
In Copenhagen, a plot of
the Black September terror-
ists to kidnap two young
sons of Queen Margaretha
and Prince Henry of Den-
mark was foiled by the au-
thorities, according to a re-
port in the paper, Ekstrabla-
det.
The conspiracy was discov-
ered when the Danish au-
thorities, acting on informa-
tion, intercepted a secret
communication in which the
plot was outlined. Special se-
curity measures have been
taken to safeguard the two
young royal princes, 5-year-
old Frederick and his 4-year-
old brother, Joachim.

Historian Argues
Herzl Was Not
Assimilationist

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
The thesis that has persisted
for over 80 years to the effect
that Dr. Theodor Herzl
father of political Zionism,
was a thoroughly assimilated
Jew who only came to Zion-
ism after the notorious Drey-
fus affair, is challenged in a
new book, authored by Dr.
Zvi Zahavi, devoted to ex-
ploring the sources of Herzl's
Zionism.
The author tries to estab-
lish by documentation that
Herzl's grandfather, Shimon
Leib, was a pious and observ-
ant Jew who dreamed of a
return to Zion.
Herzl's father, Jacob, was
a student of Rabbi Yehuda
Alcaly, one of the earliest
rabbinical exponents of mod-
ern Zionism. Herzl's father
himself was a devoted Hovey
Zion (Lover of Zion.)
From this evidence, writes
Dr. Zahavi, it is clear that
there must have been a
strong Zionist influence on
the young Herzl, in contrast
to the widely-held belief that
Herzl had become a thor-
oughly assimilated Jew.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Dr.
Nahum Goldmann, president
of the World Jewish Con-
gress maintained that there
would be no solution to the
problem of Jews in the So-
viet Union as long as there is
no settlement in the Middle
East.
He also indicated that he
expected an official invitation
shortly to visit the USSR but
said he would not accept it
unless certain conditions are
met in advance.
Speaking to reporters at
Lod Airport before leaving
for Paris, Dr. Goldmann said
he would not visit the Soviet
Union unless he could do so
as the head of a WJC delega-
tion; unless he was given an
opportunity to thoroughly dis-
cuss the Jewish question with
Russian leaders, including
Premier Alexei Kosygin; and
unless he was convinced be-
forehand that he would not
return empty handed. But Dr.
Goldmann said he was not
optimistic about Soviet redi-
ness to make concessions on
on the Jewish problem as
long as the Middle East con-
flict remains unsolved.
