Letters to Editor

Editor, The Jewish News:
Your commentary of March
30 contains two interesting
items. You quote at length
from Stanley Morse's letter
charging Jewish leaders with
insecurity in the "Bridget
Loves Bernie" fuss. I can
only assume that you hold
that Mr. Morse's view has
some value, or why would
you cite it at such length.
Yet in the second section of
the page your reaction to
two anti-Israel commentators
represents almost a case
study of what Mr. Morse is
talking about. Must everyone
always "prove" themselves
by supporting our cases? Is
every unfavorable evaluation
of events a distortion of
facts? Must every action of

Rabbi Suggests Reaction to Criticism Is Oversensitive

Incensed at Inability
to Secure Her 'Get'

ORIN ROSS

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
36—Friday, April 13, 1973

Editor, The Jewish News:
I am as incensed as I am
frustrated by the blatant,
centuries-old discriminatory
tradition among our rabbin-
ate who hold that a wife can-
not be granted a get unless
her husband is willing or in-
stitutes divorce proceedings
himself.
I am deeply convinced that
any woman should have the
right, if she chooses, to ask
for and receive a get—espe-
cially if she has already won
one in the civil courts. Why
must I continue to suffer the
spiritual, cruel degradation
of being Jewishly tied to a
man who is not a mensh?

the Jewish community or Is-
rael be justified by high
ideals or indubitable justice?
Is it surprising that out-
siders who sympathized with
us over Auschwitz and. Mun-
ich might find it hard to do
so in regard to the Libyan
plane incident? Even Israeli
editorials were highly criti-
cal. We may question the
columnist's rejection of Jew-
ish defensiveness as a "per-
secution complex" but is this
truly a distortion of fact or
a matter of opinion?
The aim of an enlightened
public relations policy is not
to get everyone to like you
all the time. It is to get most

people to take you seriously
most of the time. For this
purpose dignity and pride—
along with effective lobbying
—are more valuable than
supersensitivity to criticism.

PASSOVER BARTONETTES--

BARTON'S new sculptured, multitone
chocolates. Each tiny piece filled
with nuts, fruits, cordials or cremes.
A colorful painting of Jerusalem
decorates the box cover. 1 lb. $3.25

Those rabbis with whom I
have spoken tell me there is
nothing that can be done to
annul my marriage. They
are willing to "talk" to my
former husband. But efforts
by several others have con-
vinced him that his only
"hold" over me is to hurt me
as much as possible—so why
should he proceed to make
me more comfortable?

PASSOVER NUTS AND FRUITS—

Includes tangy fruits like apricots,
raspberries, pineapple and orange.
And crunchy pecans, almonds,
cashews and filberts. All chocolate
1 Ib.$3.25
covered.

I writhe in discomfort
when I am blocked on the
one hand by a man who is
sadistic and on the other
hand by the rabbis who
shrug their shoulder s in
finality. I am told that the
Reform rabbis can annul a
marriage, but I was married
by an Orthodox rabbi, and
would not be able to accept
anything less than an Ortho-
dox get.
I keep asking myself,
"How long, how long?"

Support for Mentally
Retarded Is Sought

Editor, The Jewish News:
In this country . . . we be-
lieve that everyone is equal
. . . and all children are en-
titled to an education, but
less than half of the public
school districts in the United
States provide special educa-
tion classes for mentally re-
tarded children.
Given the proper training
and special education, more
than 85 per cent of the men-
tally retarded can become
self-supporting citizen s.
Please "reach out" and join
Detroit Association for Re-
tarded Children. Call 831-
