Arab youths may now be found in ORT vocational high
schools and in apprenticeship centers in Israel. They are
avidly sought after following their graduation, and they re-
ceive the same pay scale as all other skilled craftsmen in
the country. ORT also maintains vocational training schools
in Arab-populated sections of Israel. Such schools, estab-
lished to service Arab youths in Arab areas, exist now in
Nazareth, Abu Gush and in East Jerusalem. The Israel
Ministry of Labor has now designated ORT to organize
modern vocational high schools for Arab students in Ile- I
bron, Tulkarem, Gaza and in the West Bank.

tions, avionics, chemical technology for industry and med-
icine, and other modern crafts.
Special attention is being paid by ORT in Israel to im-
migrants from the Soviet Union.
An inquiry conducted by the Youth Aliya department of
the Jewish Agency evaluating characteristics of 500 chil-
dren from the Soviet Union established that despite the un-
usually high proportion with academic family backgrounds,
the great majority are from skilled working class families.
They display positive attitudes toward work, aspiring te,
technical careers. The education they can obtain for reach-
ing such careers is given in Israel primarily in the ORT
vocational school system.

ORT IN U.S.: While functioning in some 90 cities around

the world as the largest international voluntary organization
in the fields of technical and vocational education and man-
power training, ORT is now planning the establishment of
vocational training facilities also in the United States. They
are intended primarily for teaching new skills to Jewish
poor in this country and thus enable them to improve their
economic condition.
A team of experts will arrive next month from Geneva
—the headquarters of the World ORT Union—to study on
the spot a project for an ORT technical school in New York.
The school will be financed by Women's American ORT, a
group with 100,000 members who last year contributed 52,-
350,000 toward the ORT programs in Israel and other over-
seas countries.
The American ORT Federation has long been sponsor-
ing a trade school in New York. This school is named after
Dr. Leon Bramson. one of the founders of ORT in Russia.
