TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
rains came to Israel — but
not where they were needed.
A heavy downpour created
monumental traffic jams in
Tel Aviv where scores of
traffic lights were put out of
action by the deluge.
There were showers in the
central area but only a few
drops fell in the drought-
ridden northern districts and
there was no rain to speak
of in the arid south.
There is snowfall on Mt.
Hermon which promises a
fresh supply of water for
Lake Tiberias and the Jor-
dan River — but not until the
spring thaw.
The absence of rain during
what is normally Israel's
rainy season will be comple-
mented shortly by an ab-
sence of weather forecasters.
Engineers and senior tech-
nicians of the meteorological
stations in Tel Aviv and Lod
Airport announced a strike
to back up their demands
for wage incrruises. No
weather forecasts will be
made except those deemed
essential to flights and secur-
ity.
In northern Israel, officials
said the lack of rain during
the first half of December
dangerously lowered the
level of Lake Tiberias which
Is the main reservoir for
the region.
The level is declining at
the rate of one centimeter
per day. Many fields have
had to be resown and are
watered artificially. 1
A aemporary dam has
been built at the meeting of
Lake Tiberias and the Jor-
dan River in order to reduce
the outflow of water from
the lake.

A communicable disease
. . . can be combatted not
only by fighting the germs
but also by strengthening the
resistance of the body under
attack. Jews can do very
little about fighting a nti-
Semitism . . . But they cer-
tainly can go on strengthen-
ing the morale of their own
people. —Salo W. Baron.
