P—
JULIUS CHAJES was quite
a table tennis tournament
player years ago in Austria
. . He recently received an
invitation to a competition at
the Bloomfield Hills home of
Dr. Myron H. Joyrich, where
he met physicist Joe Mantell
... who gave him his phone
number for a future match
in his home - - Three days
later, Julius conducted 12
men from the Detroit Feder-
ation of Musicians in their
annual concert for senior cit-
izens in Carmel Hall .
Helping one of the musicians
load his instrument in a car,
he left his briefcase un-
tended, containing the only
hand-written copies of some
of his own compositions . . .
It was gone when he came
back for it .. . But the short
tale has a happy ending . .
with Myron ringing Julius'
doorbell two days later and
giving him the briefcase . .
contents intact . . - The thief
had dropped it off at a gas
station on E. Jefferson where
someone looked inside, found
Joe's phone number and
called him . - . In turn, he
dialed Myron, who drove in
to pick up the compositions
and deliver them to a much-
relieved Julius.
SUE AND BURTON SMITH
their children, Julie
and Scott, if they wanted to
give their teachers dusting
powder for Hanuka
"What an awful idea," the
kids pouted. "Who wants
powder to dust the floor with
for a present?"

cal duo that played around
town with cousin Ken Miller,
son of Shirley and Sol Miller,
has gone a long way in the
field of entertainment -
The son of Esthell and Mike
Miller was, up until two
months ago, Paul Anka's
conductor, touring Europe
and America before leaving
to settle in Los Angeles - .
and now free-lance writing
pictures and recordings (He
arranged and conducted all
the music for "The Present-
ers" TV series produced in
LA by Detroiters Mike and
brother Perry Krause .
Bruce was in town recently
to visit his folks, en route to
New York and marriage
there to Pamela Thaler,
daughter of Marilyn and Sig-
mund Thaler . . The Miller
Boys played many intermis-
sions for The Counts, in
which Mike was on drums
and Perry, bass - . When
21, Bruce also played guitar
for The Counts, who had
played his Bar Mitzva at
Temple Israel.
OVERHEARD . . by In-
ternal Revenue Man Ernie
Iczkowitz . an agent in his
office telling an agitated tax-
payer, "Yes, Mr. . .
I'm afraid we DO want to
make a federal case out of
it!"
DON COHEN'S Santa Claus
suit won't go to waste this
year - . at least not for one
day of happiness at Provi-
dence Hospital, where he'll
be a welcome sight to the
kiddies today.
